We all have those days when we are so done with Netflix, tired of staying home on our days off, and just want to go out for a drive.

We have done many day trips from Brisbane as a family, and we always have our personal favourites. We narrowed them down to our best and most unforgettable experiences. This list is written in no particular order.

1. North Stradbroke Island

Can you do a day trip from Stradbroke Island? Definitely! It is a fantastic way to experience the natural beauty and laid-back atmosphere of this island paradise.

Sealink Stradbroke Ferries is located southeast of Brisbane and takes approximately 30-40 minutes to drive. From the ferry terminal, you can bring your car for a 45-minute ferry ride to the island.

Our favourite activities here with the kids include fishing at Amity Point jetty, swimming at Cylinder beach and taking in the coastal views at Point Lookout while doing the 1.2 kilometre Gorge walk.

We most especially love having brunch with great ocean views at one of the cafes nearby while enjoying some people-watching.

2. Strawberry View Coffee Shack

Situated in the rural suburb of Bellmere, just an hour’s drive from Brisbane, the Strawberry View Coffee Shack enjoys a serene location surrounded by strawberry fields and scenic farmland.

Its peaceful setting offers a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Highlights of our visit include freshly baked scones served with homemade jam and cream, waffles with strawberries and ice cream paired with a good cup of coffee.

We bought their fresh strawberries sourced directly from their nearby fields, and they are the sweetest ever!

A bonus is that you can sit back and relax while enjoying views of the surrounding countryside. They have an outdoor seating area and a playground for the little ones to run around.

With its friendly service, delicious food, and idyllic setting, it is a hidden gem worth discovering for locals and visitors alike.

3. Maleny Dairies

Maleny Dairies is situated in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, a 1.5-hour drive from Brisbane.

This is one of the most memorable day trips from Brisbane that we had with the kids. A visit to Maleny Dairies offers a wonderful opportunity to experience life on a working dairy farm and indulge in delicious dairy products.

We joined a guided farm tour to learn about the daily workings of the dairy farm. We had the opportunity to meet the resident cows, see the milking process in action, and gain insights into sustainable farming practices.

We also had the opportunity to experience the fun of bottle-feeding adorable calves during our tour. This hands-on activity is a favourite among visitors of all ages and offers a unique opportunity to interact with the farm’s youngest residents.

After the farm tour, find a scenic spot on the farm grounds to enjoy a picnic lunch. You can purchase refreshments from the onsite cafe, which offers a selection of snacks, sandwiches, and locally sourced dairy products.

4. Summer Land Camels

One of the best day trips from Brisbane that we highly recommend is Summerland Camels. A drive here from Brisbane takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. It features a tranquil setting surrounded by rolling hills and lush pastures.

They offer a range of engaging visitor experiences designed to educate and entertain guests of all ages. These experiences include guided farm tours, camel feeding sessions and camel rides.

The kids especially loved feeding the camels. For a small fee, you can buy camel food outside the cafe.

For lunch, you can purchase refreshments from the on-site cafe, which offers a selection of gourmet sandwiches, salads, and camel milk products. A must-try is their popular camel ice cream.

5. Kooroomba Vineyards and Lavender Farm

Situated amidst the picturesque countryside of the Scenic Rim, Kooroomba Lavender Farm offers breathtaking views of rolling hills, vineyards, and lavender fields.

The highlight of our visit is its expansive lavender fields, where rows of fragrant lavender plants bloom in vibrant hues of purple.

You can wander through the fields, take in the aromatic scent of lavender, and capture stunning photos against the picturesque landscape backdrop.

You can also enjoy wine-tasting experiences at the cellar door, sampling a selection of handcrafted wines. Unfortunately for us, the cellar door closes at 3 pm, so we missed out on that, but we will definitely be back!

6. Montville

If you are longing for a peaceful escape from the city, but still want your kids to have fun, then a day trip to Montville might be just what you need.

Montville is a picturesque rural town nestled in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. It is a perfect escape from the busy city life. If you are driving to Montville, expect a scenic drive, greeted by stunning, lush green landscape views.

At Montville Village, you can wander through boutique shops, art galleries, and handmade craft stores, or enjoy a hearty brunch with spectacular hinterland views.

Furthermore, it offers beautiful rainforests and waterfalls, great food, wine and handmade treats.

Whether you are seeking a peaceful retreat, artistic inspiration, or a taste of local flavours, Montville offers a charming and enriching experience.

7. Stanthorpe

A family day trip from Brisbane to Stanthorpe offers a delightful blend of scenic drives, outdoor adventures, and kid-friendly attractions.

Driving time from Brisbane is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Our favourite stop includes the Christmas farm, where the kids can feed farm animals and walk through their field of Christmas trees. A visit here is never complete without trying their popular hot chocolate, and trust me, it is so good!

Other activities we enjoyed in Stanthorpe are apple picking, a hike at Giraween National Park and wine tasting at one of its many vineyards.

We highly suggest visiting Stanthorpe in Autumn, as the place accentuates the striking colours of the Autumn season.

8. Sirromet Winery

If you want to visit a vineyard and wine cellar that is not too far away from Brisbane, then Sirromet Winery should be on the list.

It is approximately a 30 to 45-minute drive from Brisbane, offering wine tasting and cellar door tours.

We like buying a bottle of wine and enjoying it together while the kids run around the vast landscape. There are also wallabies around the area that delight the young ones.

They offer an on-site restaurant and cafe, giving you more food and drink options.

9. Tropical Fruit World

Tropical Fruit World is an exciting and unique day trip from Brisbane, located just south of the Queensland border, near the Gold Coast.

It’s a family-friendly destination that offers visitors the chance to explore a plethora of tropical fruits and learn about their cultivation, history, and cultural significance.

We very much enjoyed the guided tour of the farm, where we were shown around the orchards, given in-depth knowledge of the fruit-growing process, and allowed to taste the fruit directly from the trees.

The kids’ personal favourite was cracking fresh macadamia nuts and eating them straight up! We also love the relaxing river cruise at the end of the tour.

With its fun tours, Tropical Fruit World is a hit with kids and families, making it a perfect day trip from Brisbane for all ages.

10. Burleigh Head National Park- Oceanview Track

This is one of my favourite day trips from Brisbane. We couldn’t recommend this highly enough, especially with the little ones!

The Oceanview Track is a scenic coastal walking trail situated within Burleigh Head National Park, along the Gold Coast coastline. The park is easily accessible by car and public transportation, with parking available near the entrance off Goodwin Terrace.

Upon arriving at the car park you will be greeted by spectacular ocean views. We sat on the grass for a while to take in the breathtaking view in front of us.

There are lots of relaxing spots for a picnic, and benches if you plan to sit back and enjoy a good book.

We visited this place specifically to do the walking track. It is ideal for families with young children, as it is a very easy walk and is pram-accessible. It is a 1.2-kilometre walking trail (one way).

The best part about this trail is the stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding coastline. As you walk, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the azure waters, golden beaches, and rugged headlands that characterise the Gold Coast region.

11. Tallebudgera Creek

Tallebudgera Creek is located on the Gold Coast. It is a popular spot for locals due to its stunning natural beauty and a variety of outdoor activities.

This is our personal favourite if we are up for a beach trip. The water is clear and calm, so the kids can safely swim and play on the shore. The area is surrounded by lush bushland, offering a scenic environment for a relaxing day out.

It has picnic tables, barbecue areas and a very nice playground just near the water. It ticks all the boxes for the best beach day trip from Brisbane.

12. Lake Moogerah Picnic Area

If you are up for a scenic drive through the Scenic Rim region, with stops at local cafes and farm gates, then stop by Lake Moogerah. It is located approximately 90 kilometres southwest of Brisbane.

While having a picnic with the family, you will be awed by the stunning lake and mountain views as your backdrop.

Amenities include picnic tables, free barbecues, and a playground. It also has plenty of open space for the kids to run around.

13. Toowoomba Japanese Garden

The Toowoomba Japanese Garden is located approximately 125 kilometres west of Brisbane.

We highly recommend visiting during spring (September–November) when the garden comes alive with colour and the delicate Cherry Blossoms create a breathtaking scenery.

The kids have so much fun following the walking paths that lead through traditional Japanese landscaping and picturesque red bridges. They were entertained by the koi-filled ponds and gentle waterfalls.

They can spot some wildlife such as ducks, turtles, and colourful koi that add to the tranquil experience. It also has rest areas that provide a perfect place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

14. Byron Bay

Can you do a day trip from Brisbane to Byron Bay? Definitely! It is a perfect getaway for beaches, food, and nature!

Do not forget to visit the popular Byron Bay Lighthouse, as it is popular for a reason. It stands proudly on Australia’s most easterly point, offering panoramic views of Byron Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

After visiting the lighthouse, you can enjoy a picnic at Byron Bay’s beautiful beaches or just walk around the shops, blend in with the town’s relaxed bohemian vibe and enjoy its many great cafés.

15. Palm Beach Parklands

Palm Beach Parklands is a vibrant recreational area located on the Gold Coast. Known for its family-friendly amenities and scenic beauty, it’s a popular destination for both locals and visitors.

We love this place simply because of the calm waters and big open space where kids can run around and play. It has the lovely Dune Cafe nearby for a good cup of coffee or brunch.

Otherwise, the family can bring a picnic and make use of the barbecue facilities while the kids engage at the Pirate Playground, a large pirate ship play area for them to climb, slide, run and jump around.

16. Wellington Point Recreation Reserve

Wellington Point Recreation Reserve, located approximately 25 km southeast of Brisbane CBD, is a cherished coastal destination on the Redland Coast.

We personally believe this is the best place to visit if you want to witness the most beautiful sunset.

Another must-do experience is the King Island walk. During low tide, a natural sand causeway emerges, allowing visitors to walk to King Island. This unique two-kilometre return walk offers stunning ocean views.

Apart from that, the kids also get to enjoy the playground, swim in the calm waters and build sandcastles.

This place also features a jetty popular for fishing, multiple shaded picnic spots equipped with tables and benches and electric barbecue facilities.

Tickets for the Airtrain service can be purchased online, at the airport, or at selected stations. The ticket prices vary depending on your destination and whether you choose a one-way or return ticket.

Taxi

Taxis and ride-sharing services such as Uber and Didi are also readily available in Brisbane. Taxis can be hailed on the street, or you can book a ride through one of the many taxi companies in the city.

Ride-sharing services can be booked through their respective apps.

Taxi fares in Brisbane are regulated by the Queensland Government, and fares are calculated based on distance and time. There are also additional charges for tolls and late-night travel.

You can pay for your taxi ride with cash, credit or debit card, or through a taxi company’s mobile app.

It is also a great way to see Brisbane from a different perspective and enjoy scenic views of the river and surrounding areas. An added bonus is you can ride them for free, by hopping in and out of the Kitty Cat ferries.

Car Rental

For those who prefer to drive themselves, there are several car rental companies operating in Brisbane. Car rental desks are located at the Brisbane Airport and in the city center, making it easy for pick up and drop off.

When driving in Brisbane, it’s important to be aware of the city’s toll roads, which can add to the cost of your journey. If you are not from Australia, also take note that we make use of the right-hand drive.

Parking options in Brisbane include street parking, public car parks, and private parking facilities. However, parking in the city center can be expensive, and parking spaces can be limited during peak periods.

Bus

Getting around Brisbane by bus is a convenient and affordable option for visitors. The bus system is operated by TransLink, which provides a network of bus routes that cover the entire city and surrounding suburbs.

Electric Scooters and E-bikes

Electric scooters and or bicycles can be a fun and convenient way to get around Brisbane’s central business district and surrounding areas. They are available for hire through several companies, such as Lime and Neuron, and can be unlocked using their respective mobile apps.

We highly recommend utilizing these when wandering around the CBD, as they are fun, save so much time, and you also get less tired as the day wears on.

Lots of Walking

Walking and more walking is the best way to explore Brisbane CBD. Every attraction within the city is pretty much walkable if you are up for the challenge. If traveling with kids, you can make a few stopovers at parks, cafes, or playgrounds along the way so they can catch up and rest.

Things to Do Near Brisbane Domestic Airport

While there are many things to do within the airport itself, it is worth exploring its surrounding areas if you have a 24-hour (or even shorter) layover in Brisbane. Here are places to see if you have ample time to spare while waiting for your flight:

Skygate

Skygate is a shopping, dining, and entertainment precinct conveniently located within close proximity (a 5-minute drive) to Brisbane Airport. It is home to several popular shopping destinations, including DFO Brisbane.

The precinct also has a 24-hour Woolworths and fitness centre, a range of services such as a beauty and massage centre, and medical and dental clinics.

Skygate is easily accessible by public transport, with regular buses running to and from the airport and the city. You can make use of the free Skygate Airport Transfer Bus from Brisbane Domestic or International Airport terminals to Skygate, which operates 7 days a week.

There is also ample parking available on-site, with both undercover and open-air parking options.

DFO

Kids and adults alike will enjoy this relaxing Ferris wheel ride. Surprisingly the ride is slow and steady, giving you time to breathe in the scenic views.

The best time of the day to do so would be at sunset when you can see the panoramic river and city views from up top.

Brisbane Sign

While at South Bank Parklands, stop by the big Brisbane sign for a snapshot. This popular Instagram-worthy spot is located next to the Wheel of Brisbane.

Queensland Gallery of Modern Art (QGoMA)

Located in South Bank, QGOMA is one of Australia’s leading contemporary art museums. It features a range of exhibitions throughout the year, showcasing works from local, national, and international artists.

If you have kids, never miss its dedicated Children’s Art Centre, designed to keep children of all ages entertained, with projects and activities that can pique their interest in arts and crafts.

River Walk

The river runs through the heart of the city, and there are many beautiful walking paths and parks along its banks. You can also take a relaxing river cruise which includes morning or afternoon tea.

You can start your river walk along South Bank and continue towards Kangaroo Point, which is approximately a 2-kilometer walk, however, you can always find and hire an e-scooter or bicycle along the way if you get tired of all that walking.

Kangaroo Point Cliffs

The Kangaroo Point Cliffs is a popular tourist destination and have a range of activities for visitors. it is located on the east bank of the Brisbane River and offers stunning views of the city skyline and the river.

The area surrounding the cliffs has been developed into a parkland, which includes picnic areas, walking and cycling paths, and several recreational facilities.

The cliffs can be accessed by car or by free ferry (if you ride on one of the Kitty Cat ferries), and there are several cafes and restaurants in the area for visitors to enjoy.

Captain Burke Park

If you walk further, at the end of Kangaroo Point Cliffs, you will find Captain Burke Park. Lo and behold you will be greeted by a beautiful backdrop of the Story Bridge and Brisbane River.

Enjoy the breeze and keep going along the river bank and you will be strolling underneath the Story Bridge.

This sight is also beautiful at night, with the city lights and Story Bridge sparkling before your eyes.

Story Bridge Climb

If you are feeling adventurous, let that adrenaline kick in and take the risk of climbing the Story Bridge. It is a popular tourist attraction that allows visitors to climb to the top of the bridge and enjoy stunning views of the city and surrounding areas.

The climb takes approximately 2 hours. Climbers are accompanied by a guide who provides information about the history and construction of the bridge, as well as interesting facts about Brisbane.

Wilsons Outlook Reserve

Located just next to Howard Smith Wharves, this is one of Brisbane’s best-kept secrets. Known to locals, Wilsons Outlook Reserve is the perfect spot to see the panoramic views of the Story Bridge and Brisbane River.

We highly recommend coming here during sunset and at nighttime. You will be mesmerized by the sparkling lights of the city, river, and the Story Bridge that you just want to sit there and stare at the view all evening.

Fortitude Valley

Fortitude Valley is a vibrant and trendy suburb located at the heart of Brisbane. If you are up for a late night out, then visit this suburb as it is popular for its eclectic dining scene and bustling nightlife, with plenty of pubs, bars, and nightclubs.

New Farm Park

This is a beautiful and well-maintained park that offers something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a quiet picnic spot, a fun-filled playground for the kids, or a scenic walk or bike ride, this park has it all.

Moreover, if you happen to have your 24-hour layover during spring, New Farm Park is one of the must-visit destinations to witness the beautiful array of Jacaranda trees and their flowers.

Queen Street Mall

This pedestrian mall is lined with shops, restaurants, and cafes. It’s a great place for some shopping or people-watching.

Tip: If you are with kids and need a bit of a break, drop by Macca’s (commonly known as McDonald’s) as they have a good enough sized play area for kids, conveniently designed for parents to still keep an eye on their little humans through its glass walls while having a cup of cold frappe.

Brisbane City Botanic Gardens

The Brisbane City Botanic Gardens is a public garden located in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD, along the Brisbane River. It is a heritage-listed botanic garden that features a variety of plants, gardens, and attractions.

Daisy Hill Koala Centre

It is conveniently located 30 minutes southeast of Brisbane. The fastest and easiest way to get there is by car. Otherwise, you can also take the bus plus a short taxi ride, which would take an hour or so.

The best part about this place is that it is in proximity to the Gold Coast as well. Sirromet is just a 30- to 45-minute drive from the Gold Coast.

What to Do at Sirromet Winery

Sirromet boasts excellent dining, wine tasting and glamping experience. From its award-winning restaurants and tented pavilions to its frequently visited cellar door, this place has a lot to offer to family and friends.

The setting itself is picturesque, offering relaxing views while you sip on your glass of wine. It is one of our favourite destinations as it has the whole enchilada, which includes a vineyard, winery, lavender farm, restaurants, cellar door and unique accommodations.

Having two little kids with us, we love coming here on special occasions. However, most of the time they are spur-of-the-moment visits.

On those random days, we usually order something to eat at the cellar door and enjoy a beer or wine, have good conversations, watch the girls play, and wait for the day to pass us by.

Dine at Sirromet Winery Restaurants

Sirromet Winery has a couple of restaurants namely Lurleen’s and Tuscan Terrace. They also have the Cellar Door Cafe if you want to devour something lighter.

Tuscan Terrace

This Tuscany-inspired restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We had our lunch there on our wedding anniversary, and the food and service were great. They offer both indoor and outdoor dining.

We highly recommend eating outdoors as the view is just amazing.

It is best to make a reservation, especially if you prefer their alfresco dining, as they get booked quite quickly. You can find more details as to their opening hours, breakfast, lunch and dinner menus here.

Note: They offer colouring paper and pens to keep the little kiddos entertained.

Lurleen’s Restaurant

This is open exclusively for private functions. You can book for birthday parties, weddings and any other special occasions here.

Sirromet Cellar Door Cafe

I love that they have a cafe offering coffee and some sweet treats, which is great when coming here in the early afternoons. They have a kids’ menu for the little ones. You can also purchase your favourite bottles of wine here.

The best part about the Cellar Door is that we can choose to sit on one of the picnic tables outside, which is right next to the playground. We highly recommend doing this as the view is relaxing and just spectacular.

We like to sit here and wait for the sunset with our glass of wine. A bonus is that the girls can get themselves busy at the playground while we can still keep a close eye on them.

On the weekends, you can also enjoy live music at the Cellar Door from 12 pm to 3 PM, plus several events happening every month.

Walk Around the Lavender Farm

We can already see the lavender farm from the road prior to turning to the entrance. Out of curiosity, we walked around the grounds and voila! What beautiful scenery. We can also smell the lavender scent in the air.

Note: There are lots of bees close to the lavender plants so remind the kids to be careful, or better yet, for those with bee sting allergies just avoid getting too close.

Spot Some Wildlife

The moment we drove past the beautifully designed rustic entrance at Sirromet Winery, we could already spot a couple of kangaroos at the side of the road and along the vineyard.

Otherwise, a walk around the grounds will keep you fascinated as you will surely spot more of them jumping past you. The girls were so delighted to see them up close.

Watch the Sunset

Sunsets over wine never get old. Our best days here are waiting until the sun goes down. At the car park prior to leaving, we saw a beautiful sunset and could not help but pause and take a moment to gaze at the beautiful backdrop.

Sirromet Winery Accommodation

Sanctuary by Sirromet provides different accommodation types suitable for couples, families and larger groups. Their most popular one is the Sirromet Glamping experience, well-equipped with an ensuite, mini bar and a balcony.

Surrounded by trees and wildlife, you can immerse in nature, do some bushwalking or experience wine tasting and tours while staying in one of their accommodations.

Winery Tour and Tasting

We have always been contemplating trying this. The Cellar Door does offer a Wine Tasting experience at their bar, or if you have more time, you can try their Winery Tour, which also includes some wine tasting.

We have recently started exploring camping now that the twins are a bit older. We find it really great for kids and a fun learning experience. For us, camping in North Stradbroke Island is one of the most memorable experiences we’ve had with the girls.

‘Straddie,” as what locals call it, is located southeast of Brisbane, and is part of the Redland City Council. It is a beautiful island popular for overnight stays and day trips, given it is very accessible with or without a car.

Why Camp in North Stradbroke Island?

Aside from the fact that Straddie is just a short drive away, nothing beats sleeping with the sound of waves crashing through the shore and waking up in the morning with a beautiful view of the sparkling ocean.

The combination of camping and the beach always appeals to us, especially with kids tagging along. This gives us a chance to enjoy island life even just for a few days.

The pristine white sand beaches on this island are simply irresistible. Moreover, North Stradbroke Island boasts a variety of activities for kids and adults alike.

Do you need a 4×4 in North Stradbroke Island?

No, unless you plan to drive on the beach. Most roads are sealed and easily accessible by a 2WD. If you are planning to bring a 4WD though, it requires an appropriate permit for beach driving, so make sure you get one to avoid fines.

How to Get There

From Brisbane CBD, you can drive to the Sealink Terminal located in Cleveland, and hop on a ferry going to Nort Stradbroke Island. Cleveland is just a 30 to 40-minute drive from Brisbane CBD.

Otherwise, you can get to Cleveland from Brisbane CBD by train. Alight at Cleveland train station, and get to the ferry terminal by bus.

By Vehicle Ferry

If you are planning to bring your car across, you can ride the vehicle ferry which costs roughly $180 for a return trip. This depends on the number of passengers and type of vehicle.

The ferry ride takes 45 minutes, departing from the Sealink Terminal in Cleveland and arriving in Dunwich, a small town in North Stradbroke Island.

The ferry ride is very relaxing. Passengers can disembark from their vehicles and enjoy the ocean breeze from the second level of the ferry while having a cuppa.

Otherwise some people prefer to stay in the car, recline their seats and enjoy a comfortable and calm ride while waiting for the ferry to arrive.

By Water Taxi

This is another option for those planning to leave their cars behind. The water taxi takes around 20-25 minutes for $10 per person each way.

Same as the vehicle ferry, the water taxi departs from the Sealink Terminal in Cleveland. This is more feasible if you plan to do a day trip to North Stradbroke Island.

Whatever type of transportation you choose, it is best to book in advance as tickets sell out fast especially during peak season.

Where to Camp in North Stradbroke Island?

We booked through Minjerribah Camping in North Stradbroke Island. From their website there are plenty of camping sites and options. Our favourite campground is at Amity Point, for quite a few good reasons. You can camp on powered waterfront sites with really great ocean and sunset views.

Amity Point Campground also has cabins and beachfront eco shacks, for those not keen to bring their tents along. Facilities include shower, toilet, power, water, washing machine, dishwashing area, BBQ facilities, picnic area, kids’ playground, and free wifi.

Because the campground is so close to the beach, the kids can just play, run around and swim while you are sipping on your glass of wine. Meanwhile, hubby can have the time of his life fishing on the jetty.

How Much Does it Cost to Camp in North Stradbroke Island?

We find camping in Straddie more expensive than other campsites, probably the most expensive we’ve been to so far. Our 2 nights camping there cost us $158 ($79/night) for 2 adults and 2 kids on a powered tent site, including water.

But to be honest, aside from the Sealink Terminal a 5-minute drive from our home, nothing else has by far beaten our camping by the beach experience in North Stradbroke Island.

Fun Things to do in North Stradbroke Island with Kids

Catch a Fish at Amity Point Jetty

We walked by the jetty with the kids and they get really excited whenever they see someone catch a fish. Straddie is very popular for fishing. The jetty in Amity point is just one of the good spots for a good catch. Mind you, for a first-timer like hubby, he caught two very large bream fish.

This is where and how my husband officially started getting hooked on fishing.

Visit Point Lookout

Located at the topmost part of North Stradbroke Island, this town boasts scenic coastal views. This is where you can find the famous North Gorge walk, with nice cafes and shops close by.

Take a Dip in the Brown Lake

If you want peace and quiet, then take the time to visit the Brown Lake. It is best to go early in the morning to enjoy some tranquility, as there will be fewer people around. The silky white sand and cool water will leave you feeling refreshed.

This place also has picnic areas for everyone to enjoy.

Do the Gorge Walk

This relaxing 1-2 kilometres boardwalk at Point Lookout is no wonder very popular to visitors. It is a very easy walk, which means you can bring your kids along while enjoying the views of the ocean. If you are lucky, you can spot dolphins and whales during whale season.

Don’t forget to wear a hat and sunscreen prior to doing the walk. In addition, it is best to bring lots of snacks and water, which you can enjoy while resting under the trees or picnic tables while you savour the view.

Relax at Amity Point Campground and Beach

This is where we camped. After setting up our campsite, we let the kids swim and play by the beach. While the little ones were busy building sandcastles, I and a few friends were relaxing under our beach umbrellas with a bottle of wine. Hubby wasted no time fishing until sunset.

At night when it gets quieter, we can hear the waves crashing through the shore, lulling everyone to sleep.

Witness a Beautiful Sunset

We were fortunate enough to pick a waterfront site where we did not have to go anywhere to watch the breathtaking sunset, as it is right in front of us. The jetty at Amity Point plus the sunset makes a jaw-dropping backdrop for us while prepping our dinner.

See the Wildlife Up Close and Personal

We were lucky to spot a couple of dolphins swimming around the jetty on our first night in Amity Point. On top of that, the kids were very excited to see a koala sleeping on a tree. So yes, this place is also a good one to spot some wildlife.

Swim and Surf at Cylinder Beach

Cylinder Beach is one of the many popular beaches in North Stradbroke Island because of its fine white sand as far as the eyes can see. It is also a very popular spot for surfers.

It is any family’s favourite not only because it is patrolled by lifeguards, but also since it has a carpark located only a few meters from the beach. This means transporting your beach trolley full of beach items, snacks and drinks from the carpark to your preferred spot would be no hassle.

Sunbathe at Deadman’s Beach

Our first visit here was very memorable as the girls had an amazing time. It officially became our favourite swimming spot for kids. It had a big but shallow sandbar which was perfect for young kids like ours. They swam all afternoon, giggling and splashing.

Our next visit though was a little bit disappointing for the kids as the sandbar was no longer there. It depends on the tide and probably the season of the year. Despite that, all the kids still had fun swimming and playing along the long shoreline.

Island Activities

If you are young at heart fond of adventurous activities, there are so many things to do on the island such as surfing, taking surfing lessons, cycling, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, bushwalking and 4WD tours.

Personally, North Stradbroke Island for us ticks all the boxes for a camping trip with the whole family. This is the place where everyone, not just the kids can enjoy.

The beach, nature walks, spotting some wildlife and waking up to the smell of the ocean breeze are just a few of the things we love about Straddie.

We have made it an annual family practice to go camping in North Stradbroke Island. Every year, everyone gets that moment of excitement and anticipation whenever our camping trip to Straddie is drawing near. For us, there will always be something fun and enjoyable to look forward to.

Stanthorpe is around 2 hours and 45 minutes away from Brisbane. It is known to be the coldest town in Queensland during winter. However, there are a variety of things to do here all year round and at any season of the year.

A day trip to Stanthorpe is feasible, but if you have young kids, I recommend booking for an overnight stay, that is, if you do not want to rush during the entire trip and get cranky at the end of the day because of too much exhaustion.

Here’s how we spent 2 days in Stanthorpe with kids:

Early Wake up Call

I must say it pays to start the day early on any given road trip. Come Wednesday, and everyone woke up VERY early. We left Brisbane at 4:30 AM, and it was the best decision we have made.

Early bird catches the worm, they say. The roads were not too busy. We were driving through a foggy, cold morning with great views of the mountains, not to mention a hot cup of coffee while enjoying the scenery. It was indeed a very nice and relaxing drive.

At 7:30 AM, we arrived in Stanthorpe and decided to stop at Macca’s for breakfast. It was along the highway and seemed not too far from our next planned stopover. Plus, the twins love their pancakes.

Granite Belt Christmas Farm

The Christmas Farm was the first on the list as it opens the earliest, which is 9 AM. As we drove through the entrance, we could already see lovely Christmas decorations and hundreds of Christmas trees lined up.

Two things about this place that made it very memorable for us: farm animals and Belgian hot chocolate. They are soooooo worth it.

Santa’s Animals

Santa’s animals consist of lambs, donkeys, chooks and ducks. This was the highlight of the trip for our little girls. They enjoyed feeding Santa’s farm animals so much that it consumed most of our time there. You can purchase feeds inside the store for just $2 a bag.

Mistletoe Store

The farm also has a Mistletoe Store filled with all sorts of Christmas decorations, from pretty little Christmas tree baubles to huge wall hanging decors and wreaths and whatnot.

Cafe

Perfect place for mums who just cannot live without coffee. However, we highly recommend trying their bestseller Belgian hot chocolate.

Never dare leave without trying one. We were so full from our breakfast that we did not try the rest of their food, but their menu looked promising.

Fresh Christmas Trees

+One of the best things about this farm is that every year, starting late November, you can pick and purchase any Christmas tree of your liking, that is, if you prefer to put up a farm-fresh Christmas tree in your home for the holidays.

Sutton’s Juice Factory

Next stop is the Juice Factory. This place can never be missed as it is right across from the famous Big Apple in Stanthorpe. Here they have an on-site cafe that serves really popular and very good apple pies.

By 10 AM we were devouring their yummy apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Definitely worth a stop.

Stanthorpe Apple Picking

February to April is apple picking season in Stanthorpe and the girls were keen to see real apple trees and pick some apples themselves.

I rang Nicoletti Orchards prior to our trip, and they were more than happy to book us on a private apple-picking experience.

Apple Tasting

We made it just in time for our apple picking tour at 11 AM. We met Toni, who introduced us to 3 varieties of apples (Fuji, Envy and Pink Lady) and got the chance to taste each one of them. I must say Envy is the sweetest of them all.

Apple Picking

Toni walked with us to the apple orchard, which was massive. We can see lots of apples falling on the ground. The most awaited part of the tour was the apple picking, which was so easy and fun to do, especially for kids.

We ended up bringing home 5 kilograms of both Envy and Fuji apples at the end of the tour.

It is also a great idea to give those extra freshly picked apples to family and friends when you get home to Brisbane. Surely they will be delighted.

Stanthorpe Cheese

At around 12:30 PM, we then decided to stop by Stanthorpe Cheese as it was just 8 minutes away from Nicoletti Orchards. We had free cheese tasting (no booking required), which we highly recommend for anyone planning to visit.

If I’m not mistaken, it was a variety of 6 types of cheese, plus chutneys and relishes. Hubby and I enjoyed this part of the trip. The girls took part in the cheese tasting too, which they seemed to enjoy.

Hotel Check-in

We checked in at Boulevard Motel at around 1:30 PM. It is a place I would highly recommend for just a short overnight stay. Definitely five stars for location, cleanliness, value for money and very friendly and accommodating staff.

It was a spur-of-the-moment road trip for us, so I hurriedly booked the most reasonably priced room I could find.

We stayed in the family room with a bonus breathtaking view. It is located right next to Lions Park and Quart Pot Creek and right in the middle of the town centre. We were so exhausted by this time, so lunch and wine o’clock followed.

Stanthorpe Town Centre

At 4:00 PM, a stroll along the town centre seemed like a good idea. The park right next to where we stayed has beautiful maple trees with colourful autumn leaves falling on the ground.

The girls had a fun time throwing leaves and just running around the park.

There was no place else to see by 6 PM in a small town like Stanthorpe, so we decided to buy takeaway Chinese food, which was just a walking distance from the motel. Wine and cheese night, then again.

We finally decided to call it a night by 10 PM. Nobody dared to set the alarm for the following morning.

Quart Pot Creek

The following day, by 8 AM, we were strolling along Quart Pot Creek and taking God knows how many photos. We stopped at the big thermometer (given Stanthorpe is the coldest part of Queensland), which showed it was 14 degrees Celcius.

I must say, if only we had more time in our hands, we would have loved to sit by the creek and enjoy a picnic. This park is just breathtaking. It also has a nice playground for kids to expend all their energy.

Walanggara Railway Cafe

We checked out at Boulevard Motel at 9:30 AM and drove towards Walanggara Railway Cafe. It is a 30-minute drive south of Stanthorpe, where you can find the border between NSW and QLD. Of course, we do not want to miss the chance to be in two places at once!

By 10 AM we were enjoying a quiet brunch at Walanggara Railway Cafe. This used to be a railway station, now turned into a museum and cafe. Interestingly, the train station used to carry passengers travelling between Sydney and Brisbane back in the 80’s.

Our girls enjoyed the walk along the tracks and around the railway station and museum.

Giraween National Park

Next stop was Giraween National Park. We arrived here at around 10:30 AM. The twins had so much fun collecting sticks and hiking along one of the walking trails. You can choose different trails that suits you, depending on each trail’s difficulty level.

Of course, we opted to do the Granite Arch, which is the only kid-friendly trail (at least for our four-year-old girls) at 1.6km return.

This place features amazing granite landscapes and giant boulders. It was a nice hike with the sun out and the autumn breeze keeping us cool.

It was also a wonderful learning opportunity for the girls to explore nature, feel the cold running water, climb on rocks, skip and jump over small rock pools and cross small bridges.

Balancing Heart Vineyard

The Granite Belt is also popular for its 50 wineries. Surely we want to see and enjoy at least one of them.

At 12:30 PM, we went to The Balancing Heart Vineyard. It is such a lovely place with a very laid-back atmosphere.

It is so relaxing that we ended up staying there the entire afternoon, sipping on a variety of wines for our wine tasting, which we paired with pizza and a cheese platter.

Seeing the place was enough to forget the remainder of our itinerary for that day. Having a big grassy area for kids to run around is a bonus, as you can enjoy sipping your wine in peace.

We finally decided to head back home at around 4:30 PM, right before dusk. What a lovely way to end our Stanthorpe escapade.
