If you’re driving from Queenstown to Lake Tekapo, a day trip is achievable, but I must say exhausting, especially if you are travelling with kids.

The drive takes approximately 3 hours without stopovers. I highly recommend staying overnight somewhere along the way instead of doing the entire journey in one day.

Although the drive is incredibly scenic, it’s also long, and you’ll likely want to stop often to enjoy the many breathtaking viewpoints. Breaking up the trip gives you more time to explore at a relaxed pace and makes the journey much less tiring.

If you’re wondering whether Lake Tekapo is worth the drive, our answer is a definite YES. The incredible scenery alone makes the journey worthwhile, and it’s one of those places that looks even more beautiful in person.

From the moment we arrived, we couldn’t stop admiring the views. Everywhere you look is simply breathtaking, and every walk feels like a scenic postcard.

From our recent trip with kids, I find 2-3 days are enough to explore Lake Tekapo, not rushed, but at your own pace.

Queenstown to Lake Tekapo Drive

We rented a 12-seater van on our round-trip journey from Queenstown to Lake Tekapo as we needed more space for luggages, given we were headed straight to the airport on our way back.

We highly recommend Yes Rentals for a big group or 12-seater transport. From pickup to drop-off, everything was a breeze. Definitely worth the money.

What to see between Queenstown and Lake Tekapo?nbsp;

There are so many things to see on a Queenstown to Lake Tekapo drive, from laidback towns to breathtaking lookouts, relaxing cafes and spectacular lake views.

Trust me when I say, the scenic drive will take your breath away. Every turn will leave you in awe. Snow-capped mountains, turquoise lakes, and endless valleys unfold before your eyes, and you’ll be tempted to stop at almost every turn.

1. Arrowtown

Upon reaching this quaint little town, we happened to see a playground surrounded by beautiful colours of spring flowers. Of course, we just had to stop and let the kids play. The playground itself is breathtaking enough.

We only had a short stop as we were continuing our road trip, but we instantly fell in love with its charm. We made sure to visit Provisions Café for its amazing Belgian hot chocolate, and we’d happily return to spend more time exploring this beautiful little town.

2. The Crown Range Summit

To be honest, this stopover is never even on my list, but out of curiosity, we stopped by the lookout. It was foggy and freezing cold, but the amazing view was worth it.

3. Cardrona Hotel

Cardona is definitely a must-visit on your Queenstown to Lake Tekapo drive. We needed to stop for lunch and happened to be closest to the Cardrona Hotel.

From the outside, it looked like a typical hotel, but that quickly changed the moment we stepped inside. The atmosphere was incredibly cosy and welcoming, and at the back is a garden with comfortable outdoor seating.

What we really loved was the garden. There was a lovely outdoor fireplace and dining area with clear weather screens where guests could enjoy eating outside without freezing.

One of our favourite features was the outdoor playground, which gave our kids a chance to stretch their legs after the drive and kept them happily entertained while we waited for our meal.

Even though it was a very cold day, the place felt warm and inviting. The beautiful surroundings, with their rustic vibe and cosy touches, made us want to stay there all afternoon.

4. Cardrona Bra Fence

Also known as “Bradrona,” is another quirky and memorable stop you can add to your Queenstown to Lake Tekapo road trip, especially if you’re travelling via the Cardrona route.

What started as a small roadside display has become a popular landmark and a symbol of support for breast cancer awareness, with visitors leaving bras to raise awareness and funds for an important cause.

5. Cromwell

Cromwell is another worthwhile stop if you’re taking the alternate route between Queenstown and Lake Tekapo. We visited on our drive back and were glad we did, so if you happen to choose this route, it’s a great place to take a break.

You’ll know you’ve arrived when you spot the town’s famous giant fruit sculptures along the highway, a fun and iconic landmark that’s hard to miss!

Right by the road, you’ll find a skate park and playground, as well as local shops and cafes, making it a convenient stop. We picked up some food and enjoyed a picnic while the kids had fun at the playground, making it a good place to recharge before continuing our road trip.

6. Roaring Meg Lookout

This is a quick but worthwhile stop that you can include depending on which route you take between Queenstown and Lake Tekapo.

We stopped here on our way back to Queenstown via a different route, but this scenic road can also be taken on your way to Lake Tekapo.

It was the perfect place to pull over, stretch our legs, take a break from driving, and simply relax while enjoying the beautiful views.

7. Wanaka Lake

This is one of those places where you just want to spend your entire afternoon. It’s the perfect place for a stroll along the lake, a relaxing picnic, or simply sitting back and taking in the breathtaking scenery.

The crystal-clear lake, framed by snow-capped mountains, creates a view that’s nothing short of spectacular, while cafes and food shops just across the road make it easy to grab a coffee or a bite to eat.

We honestly wished we had planned to stay longer. We made a mental note to return one day and spend at least a couple of nights.

8. Wanaka Lavender Farm

Around this time on the road trip, we were all feeling tired. We opted to just sit outside and enjoy some well-deserved R&R.

We decided to try the lavender tea at Wanaka Farm, mostly because we were drawn to its beautiful purple colour! It turned out to be the perfect warm drink for the chilly weather.

We also loved the free honey tasting at the tea room, and the kids happily enjoyed some ice cream after that.

For an additional fee (around NZ$10 per person when we visited), you can wander through the expansive lavender fields and see some farm animals. It would have been a wonderful experience for the kids, but by then we were too tired to explore any further.

9. High Country Salmon

Everybody was feeling for some sushi once we stopped at High Country Salmon! The salmon was incredibly fresh and, without a doubt, some of the best we’ve ever tasted. If you’re a seafood lover, this is one stop you definitely won’t want to miss.

One of our favourite parts was the free salmon feeding area, where the kids had so much fun watching and feeding the fish. It’s a quick but enjoyable stop.

10.  Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel

From outside High Country Salmon, you can already see the beautiful backdrop of snow-peaked mountains and Lake Ruataniwha. We easily drove across, and not far ahead, we stopped to take in all of its beauty and snap some photos.

11. Lake Pukaki

One of our favourite stops on our Queenstown to Lake Tekapo drive is definitely Lake Pukaki! There are so many spots around the turquoise-blue lake with picnic tables where you can stop to appreciate the view or take a break and enjoy some snacks.

The place was very peaceful, feels almost magical. We just took our time sitting here, having enjoyable conversations as we knew we were nearing our destination.

12. Lake Tekapo

We finally reached our final destination, Lake Tekapo! We booked our stay at Lake Edge Holiday Park with our group of eight, and it was an ideal place for families travelling with kids, with the lake right at our doorstep!

The property had plenty of open space for children to run around, two different playgrounds, and lots of opportunities to connect with nature. The kids loved exploring the surroundings and spotting wildlife.

After a long but incredibly scenic drive, we were ready to head straight to our accommodation, rest, and recharge for the next day’s adventures around this beautiful alpine village.

Finally, for my mum’s 70th birthday, we decided it was the perfect place for a meaningful and heartfelt celebration.

This trip holds a deep emotional significance for us. Since our father’s recent passing, this will be our mother’s first birthday without him, so we wanted it to be special.

Things to Do in Queenstown for Families

Queenstown isn’t just for adventure lovers. It’s a fantastic place for families too. And of course, if we’re going, the kids are coming along! Here are some fun things to do in Queenstown with the family:

1. Take the Coach Bus to Milford Sound

I have done very thorough online research to plan our Queenstown itinerary, and every forum, Facebook page, and Instagram post says never bring your young kids, especially toddlers, to Milford Sound by coach.

Well, it goes to show every child is different because our kids totally winged this 12-hour trip!

For starters, the bus with an all-glass roof was amazing! The panoramic roof gave us uninterrupted views of the sky, towering mountains, and surrounding scenery, making the journey feel like an attraction in itself.

Secondly, the coach we booked made many stops along the way so everyone could stretch their legs and take photos of the scenery. Make sure you get off at every stop so the kids don’t get bored.

We booked our Milford Sound Tour through Klook. The tour includes complimentary pickup and drop-off at central locations in Queenstown, the coach and boat ride, lunch with unlimited tea and coffee and several scenic stops along the way.

Videos and photos never did justice to how breathtaking Milford Sound is. You have to actually be there to soak in all its beauty.

To be honest, I hesitated after reading all the advise about not bringing young kids to this tour, but trust your instinct, mummas! We know our kids better. It was definitely one of the best experiences we’ve had in Queenstown!

2. TSS Earnslaw Round-Trip Boat Ride

Cruising across Lake Wakatipu on the historic TSS Earnslaw is a must-do Queenstown experience, with its stunning alpine scenery. The round-trip journey takes you to Walter Peak High Country Farm.

TSS Earnlaw is a beautifully preserved vintage steamship. What makes it special is that it’s still powered by its original coal-fired steam engines, which you can actually see in action down in the engine room.

You can imagine how amazed the kids were when we walked into their engine room!

The journey itself is just as memorable as the destination, with panoramic mountain views and open-air decks.

3. Have a BBQ Lunch at Walter Peak Farm

We enjoyed a lovely barbecue lunch that was included in our boat ride, made even more special with a complimentary happy birthday song and dessert from the staff, and my mum blowing her birthday candle!

Such a thoughtful touch that made the experience even more memorable!

The tour ended with an engaging sheep-shearing demonstration and farm show, which was very entertaining.

4. Relax at Onsen Hot Pools

I keep on saying this to everyone, and I will say it again: Soaking in the Onsen Hot Pools is one of the best things to do in Queenstown!

I was sceptical at first, given it did cost a lot, and thought it might just be an overrated experience. Turns out, you really have to experience it to believe it.

I was speechless the moment the door opened to our private hot pool overlooking the mountains and the river. It felt so magical, like everything just slowed down.

We went early in the morning, and personally, it is the most peaceful and dreamy time to soak up the views.

Our experience was next-level luxury. Everything from start to finish felt like five-star, the elegant reception and the attention to every detail. This experience is definitely worth every dollar you paid for!

5. Do the Gondola and Luge Ride

One of the highlights of our Queenstown family trip was riding the Skyline Gondola and trying the luge. We chose the ticket package that included the gondola ride plus three luge rides, which was perfect for getting the full experience.

The luge was so much fun and an instant favourite with the girls. They absolutely had a blast racing down the tracks. And to make it more memorable, everywhere you look is picture-perfect, overlooking the city with its beautiful lake and mountains.

It was an activity we all enjoyed together and definitely one of the most memorable parts of our time in Queenstown.

6. Stay Somewhere with Stunning Lake and City Views

Wake up to breathtaking views every day in Queenstown. The place we stayed at boasts amazing scenery from every part of the house, so much so that we never wanted to leave!

Imagine looking out the bedroom window, prepping in the kitchen, or having coffee on the balcony, and then having this amazing view of the lake and the city, with sparkling city lights at night, every single day!

Queenstown city centre is full of life and offers plenty to see and do for all ages.

7. Shop for Souvenirs

Walking around Queenstown city centre without any plans brought us to different souvenir shops. Each shop has different things to offer at reasonable prices. We bought t-shirts, mugs, keychains and fridge magnets.

It is an enjoyable activity, especially if you have extra time to spare.

8. Enjoy Desserts at Patagonia

This is one of those must-do things in Queenstown for anyone with a sweet tooth. We treated ourselves to a selection of rich desserts and creamy ice cream, and it was absolutely worth it.

On the second floor, you can sit with a view or watch the staff make desserts through a glass window.

With so many indulgent flavours to choose from and a cozy spot to enjoy them, it’s the perfect sweet treat after a day of exploring the town.

9. Eat at Fergburger

I really thought this was just hype, given I am not a burger person, but after trying their Tropical Swine and Sweet Bambi, both hubby and I can honestly say it was the best burger we’ve had in our entire lives.

The queue was not too long, and the wait was not that bad as we went there a little after 10 AM.

If you do not try Fergburger when in Queenstown, you are definitely missing out!

10. Lindt Hot Chocolate and Ice Cream

For some reason, we keep coming back to this place during our Queenstown holiday.

It could be because we always walk past Lindt on our way home. Or it could be just an enjoyable place to sit back, watch the town pass you by, while staying warm with a nice cup of hot chocolate.

We incidentally discovered how good their ice cream is when we ordered some for the kids. Trust me, it’s a must-try!

11. Cookie time

No visit to Queenstown city centre is complete without stopping by Cookie Time, a local favourite known for its warm, freshly baked cookies. The place features fun, colourful interiors and a playful atmosphere.

It’s a perfect place to grab a treat while strolling along Queenstown city centre, or if you are looking for a post-lunch dessert.

We also bought some to take home and share with close family and friends back in Australia.

12. Shop Whittaker’s Chocolate

Do not leave Queenstown without stocking up on Whittaker’s chocolate. It’s one of the creamiest, smoothest, and best-quality chocolates I’ve ever tasted, with a huge variety of delicious flavours that are well worth trying.

My personal favourites are Creamy Milk and Berry & Biscuit. They’re absolutely addictive!

I also noticed that Whittaker’s is significantly cheaper to buy in New Zealand than in Australia, making it the perfect souvenir or treat to take home.

There are also plenty of free things to do in Queenstown, from scenic lake walks to stunning viewpoints that showcase the town’s natural beauty. It’s a great destination where you can enjoy incredible experiences without spending a dollar.

13. Stroll and Have a Picnic at the Esplanade

One of the best free things to do in Queenstown is to stroll along the Esplanade and enjoy a relaxing picnic by the lake.

You can sit for hours taking in the breathtaking views of the crystal-clear water framed by snow-capped mountains, or try the variety of food sold by stalls along the esplanade.

It’s also a great spot for people-watching as visitors and locals pass by, adding to the area’s lively yet calm vibe. With its wide open space, kids can safely run around and get entertained by lots of ducks swimming along the lake.

If slow days are what you’re after, this is the perfect place to unwind.

14. Walk the Queenstown Gardens Trail

This is one of the most memorable things to do in Queenstown for us, as a family, and to think it’s free!

This is a very easy 2-kilometre walking track suitable for all fitness levels, perfect for slowing down and enjoying nature.

Along the way, you’ll pass manicured gardens, rose beds, and open green spaces with stunning views of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains. Every turn will take your breath away.

15. Let the Kids Enjoy the Queenstown Lakefront Playground

After all the walking, it’s good to stop by the Queenstown Lakefront Playground to let the kids drain all their energy while you can relax on nearby benches or grassy areas, soaking in Queenstown’s natural beauty.

Located right by the lake, it offers a fun and safe space where kids can climb, slide, and explore while surrounded by stunning mountain and water views.

16. Stroll Around Queenstown Gardens

Queenstown Gardens is one of the best free places to visit in Queenstown, perfect for a relaxed stroll surrounded by nature.

You can wander through beautifully maintained gardens while taking in peaceful lake views and the stunning mountain backdrop.

It’s an easy, scenic walk where you can simply slow down, enjoy the fresh air, and soak up the natural beauty all around you.

17. Sit Back and Relax at Village Green

We happened to walk past here on our way to the Lindt Cafe. Village Green is a small park at the heart of Queenstown. It is one of the best free places to visit, especially for families looking to relax.

The kids love running around the spacious open lawn. The running water, ducks and birds are enough to entertain them, while adults can sit back and soak up the sunshine.

There are plenty of other things to do just outside Queenstown, making it easy to turn your visit into a memorable day trip. From scenic drives to nearby towns and nature spots, there’s even more to explore beyond the city centre.

18. Road Trip to Glenorchy

A road trip to Glenorchy is an absolute must when visiting Queenstown, with one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand.

The journey hugs the edge of Lake Wakatipu, offering endless photo-worthy stops along the way where you can pull over, take in the views, and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Once you arrive, don’t miss a stop at the iconic Red Shed, a charming little spot perfect for a quick break and a bite while soaking up the lakefront views.

We also missed out on the Glenorchy Animal Experience, as it only operates during certain months, but it’s definitely something we’d love to come back for next time.

19. Road trip to Arrowtown

Arrowtown offers a charming step back in time with its historic gold-mining village feel. You can wander along the quaint streets and explore boutique shops and cafes.

We didn’t have enough time to fully explore, as it was just a stop along the way during our road trip. Still, we made sure to visit Provisions Cafe for its amazing coffee and hot chocolate, which was a highlight.

We would definitely love to come back to this lovely little town, as it looked like a very promising place to explore properly and enjoy at a slower pace.

20. Day Trip to Cardrona

A day trip to the iconic Cardrona Hotel from Queenstown is a must, located approximately an hour’s drive away.

We stopped here for lunch and wished we could stay longer. The menu can be quite expensive, but it was worth it to be there and enjoy the experience. You will be charmed once you step inside, with its rustic character, cosy atmosphere, and picture-perfect mountain backdrop.

They have an outdoor fireplace area, as well as enclosed seating to keep you warm and comfortable, plus a playground for kids to enjoy, making it a great stop for families.

While in the area, it’s also worth stopping by the famous Cardrona Bra Fence, a quirky roadside installation that has grown into a symbol of support and awareness for breast cancer.

21. Road Trip to Wanaka

A road trip from Queenstown to Lake Wanaka is an unforgettable experience, with one of the most breathtaking drives in New Zealand.

I couldn’t emphasise this enough, but make sure you are wide awake and have your phones ready when you are driving towards the lake, as it is just BREATHTAKING.

We did set out to find the famous Wanaka Tree, but unfortunately didn’t manage to spot it, as by that time we were already quite tired from the journey, so make sure you do your research beforehand.

There are also plenty of other places to explore in Wanaka aside from the lake itself, including the beautiful Wānaka Lavender Farm and salmon fishing experiences, both offering a peaceful way to enjoy the region.

If it is your first visit, then I highly recommend staying at the heart of Melbourne. You’ll be within walking distance to the city’s best cafés, restaurants, shopping, and iconic laneways, with easy access to public transport if you want to explore further.

We stayed at one of the apartments across Southern Cross Station, through Booking.com, and nothing beats convenience, especially when you are travelling with kids.

It was a high-rise apartment with great city views, and the kids kept themselves busy watching the trams pass by below. At night, you will be mesmerised by the sparkling city lights all around you.

5. Enjoy Lunch at a Random Hidden Laneway- You Can’t Go Wrong!

After check-in, we walked around the CBD and peeked into this small alley, which looked vibrant yet really cozy, and the sign read “Khaosan Lane.” It was so random, but there were so many food options, and they were all really good!

6. Chill at Degraves St

After some walking, sit and relax at this popular spot, Degraves Street. It is pure Melbourne charm — a cosy little laneway buzzing with cafés, the smell of fresh coffee, and that laid-back city vibe.

It’s the kind of place where you grab a seat, people-watch, and soak up the Melbourne vibe without a rush.

7. Wander Through Queen Victoria Market

Queen Victoria Market is a popular place bursting with local flavour. From fresh produce and gourmet treats to unique souvenirs, it’s the perfect place to snack your way through the stalls.

Make sure you check their trading hours before visiting, as they may vary. They also have seasonal night markets.

11. Meetup at Flinders St Station

Don’t leave Melbourne without visiting Flinders Street Station-it’s basically a rite of passage. Snap a photo under its famous clocks and golden dome, where locals have been saying “meet me under the clocks” for generations.

It’s not just a train station. This iconic spot remains one of Melbourne’s most popular meeting places.

12. Step Inside the Instagram-Worthy State Library

Have a quiet moment in the middle of the city’s buzz. It’s more than just a library, think stunning architecture, that iconic domed reading room, and a peaceful space to slow down.

Even if you’re not a book lover, it’s one of those places that feels special the moment you walk in.

13. Say a Little Prayer at St. Paul’s Cathedral

This place never goes unnoticed. While strolling along the busy streets of Melbourne, we found St. Paul’s Cathedral, its beautiful architecture standing tall in the middle of the city.

It offers a peaceful escape from the busy streets outside. Step in, soak up the calm, and admire the timeless charm.

14. Get Inspired at Brighton Bathing Boxes

This must be one of the most popular things to do in Melbourne. You just gotta love the vibrant colours of Brighton’s Bathing Boxes.

While the adults were busy snapping lots of photos, the kids kept themselves busy collecting sea shells and playing at the shore.

15. Enjoy the Sunset at Geelong Waterfront

We happened to stop by this place on our way back from a road trip, and it was just breathtaking. You could hear the oohs and ahhs in the car as we approached the top of the hill, with breathtaking views of the sparkling water and the giant sky wheel.

16. Sit and Watch the City Go by at Federation Square

Spend some time wandering through Federation Square, one of the city’s most vibrant gathering spots.

With its unique architecture and lively atmosphere, it’s the perfect place to just enjoy the buzz without spending a thing.

The kids especially loved running around here while taking a break from our city walk.

17. Enjoy a Picnic at Royal Botanic Gardens

On our way to the National Gallery of Victoria, we stopped by the Royal Botanic Gardens by the river to just relax and let the kids run loose.

With its wide open spaces, it’s the perfect spot to slow down, have a picnic, and enjoy a little slice of nature.

18. Let the Kids Explore the National Gallery of Victoria

Explore the National Gallery of Victoria, where general entry to its impressive collections is free. There are so many great pieces of artwork worth snapping photos with. Even the iconic water wall at the entrance is worth a visit on its own.

When we visited, they had free exhibitions to keep the kids entertained.

19. Walk Under the Web Bridge at Night

Take a night stroll under the striking Webb Bridge, one of Melbourne’s hidden architectural gems. As it lights up after dark, the unique woven design creates a magical tunnel-like experience over the Yarra River.

It’s a free and peaceful short walk that kids can enjoy, showing a completely different side of the city at night.

20. Catch up with Friends

One of the best things to do in Melbourne is simply to catch up with friends or family.

For us with young kids, catching up these days means a picnic at the park or playground that turns into hours of chatting, or drinks at their place while the kids can safely run around and play together.

A fun and educational stop for families is the Yakult Factory Tour, where kids can learn how their favourite probiotic drink is made.

It was on our list since the kids absolutely love this drink, but we sadly ran out of time. Definitely one we would have loved to experience and would recommend adding to your itinerary.

22. The Great Ocean Road

Take a scenic drive along the world-famous Great Ocean Road, one of the most unforgettable things to do in Melbourne. We fell in love with its dramatic coastal cliffs and stunning ocean views,

Make sure you make the iconic stops at the Twelve Apostles and the Great Ocean Road Memorial.

It can be a long drive for little kids, so we had to make a few stops and breaks to stretch their legs, but the travel is so worth it, filled with wow moments at every stop and turn.

23. Miss Marple’s Tea Room

Step into a storybook setting at Miss Marple’s Tearoom, a charming escape in the Dandenong Ranges just outside Melbourne.

This place has a cosy cottage feel. My personal favourite is their hearty, freshly baked scones with jam and cream.

Be sure to arrive early as they don’t take bookings, and the queue and wait time can be quite long.

24. Tesselaar Kabloom Festival

If you happen to visit Melbourne between the autumn months, don’t miss a colourful day out at Tesselaar KaBloom Festival of Flowers, perfect for families with kids.

Take lots of photos with the bursting colours of the flower fields as your backdrop.

Hop on the tractor ride for a fun tour around the grounds, then let the little ones explore the maze and find their way out, or spend the rest of their energy at the playground.

We visited here late in the afternoon, nearly closing time, which we highly recommend as the crowd starts to disappear, and you can have the place almost all to yourself!

25. Puffing Billy Railway Ride

This was one we were honestly heartbroken to miss-it was right at the top of our Melbourne bucket list!

Unfortunately, with our last-minute trip, tickets for Puffing Billy Railway were already sold out during our visit, so it’s definitely something we’d recommend booking in advance!

The ride takes you on a magical journey through the Dandenong Ranges. With its open-sided carriages and legs-out-the-window experience, it seems like a fun and memorable ride for both kids and adults.

We all have those days when we are so done with Netflix, tired of staying home on our days off, and just want to go out for a drive.

We have done many day trips from Brisbane as a family, and we always have our personal favourites. We narrowed them down to our best and most unforgettable experiences. This list is written in no particular order.

1. North Stradbroke Island

Can you do a day trip from Stradbroke Island? Definitely! It is a fantastic way to experience the natural beauty and laid-back atmosphere of this island paradise.

Sealink Stradbroke Ferries is located southeast of Brisbane and takes approximately 30-40 minutes to drive. From the ferry terminal, you can bring your car for a 45-minute ferry ride to the island.

Our favourite activities here with the kids include fishing at Amity Point jetty, swimming at Cylinder beach and taking in the coastal views at Point Lookout while doing the 1.2 kilometre Gorge walk.

We most especially love having brunch with great ocean views at one of the cafes nearby while enjoying some people-watching.

2. Strawberry View Coffee Shack

Situated in the rural suburb of Bellmere, just an hour’s drive from Brisbane, the Strawberry View Coffee Shack enjoys a serene location surrounded by strawberry fields and scenic farmland.

Its peaceful setting offers a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Highlights of our visit include freshly baked scones served with homemade jam and cream, waffles with strawberries and ice cream paired with a good cup of coffee.

We bought their fresh strawberries sourced directly from their nearby fields, and they are the sweetest ever!

A bonus is that you can sit back and relax while enjoying views of the surrounding countryside. They have an outdoor seating area and a playground for the little ones to run around.

With its friendly service, delicious food, and idyllic setting, it is a hidden gem worth discovering for locals and visitors alike.

3. Maleny Dairies

Maleny Dairies is situated in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, a 1.5-hour drive from Brisbane.

This is one of the most memorable day trips from Brisbane that we had with the kids. A visit to Maleny Dairies offers a wonderful opportunity to experience life on a working dairy farm and indulge in delicious dairy products.

We joined a guided farm tour to learn about the daily workings of the dairy farm. We had the opportunity to meet the resident cows, see the milking process in action, and gain insights into sustainable farming practices.

We also had the opportunity to experience the fun of bottle-feeding adorable calves during our tour. This hands-on activity is a favourite among visitors of all ages and offers a unique opportunity to interact with the farm’s youngest residents.

After the farm tour, find a scenic spot on the farm grounds to enjoy a picnic lunch. You can purchase refreshments from the onsite cafe, which offers a selection of snacks, sandwiches, and locally sourced dairy products.

4. Summer Land Camels

One of the best day trips from Brisbane that we highly recommend is Summerland Camels. A drive here from Brisbane takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. It features a tranquil setting surrounded by rolling hills and lush pastures.

They offer a range of engaging visitor experiences designed to educate and entertain guests of all ages. These experiences include guided farm tours, camel feeding sessions and camel rides.

The kids especially loved feeding the camels. For a small fee, you can buy camel food outside the cafe.

For lunch, you can purchase refreshments from the on-site cafe, which offers a selection of gourmet sandwiches, salads, and camel milk products. A must-try is their popular camel ice cream.

5. Kooroomba Vineyards and Lavender Farm

Situated amidst the picturesque countryside of the Scenic Rim, Kooroomba Lavender Farm offers breathtaking views of rolling hills, vineyards, and lavender fields.

The highlight of our visit is its expansive lavender fields, where rows of fragrant lavender plants bloom in vibrant hues of purple.

You can wander through the fields, take in the aromatic scent of lavender, and capture stunning photos against the picturesque landscape backdrop.

You can also enjoy wine-tasting experiences at the cellar door, sampling a selection of handcrafted wines. Unfortunately for us, the cellar door closes at 3 pm, so we missed out on that, but we will definitely be back!

6. Montville

If you are longing for a peaceful escape from the city, but still want your kids to have fun, then a day trip to Montville might be just what you need.

Montville is a picturesque rural town nestled in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. It is a perfect escape from the busy city life. If you are driving to Montville, expect a scenic drive, greeted by stunning, lush green landscape views.

At Montville Village, you can wander through boutique shops, art galleries, and handmade craft stores, or enjoy a hearty brunch with spectacular hinterland views.

Furthermore, it offers beautiful rainforests and waterfalls, great food, wine and handmade treats.

Whether you are seeking a peaceful retreat, artistic inspiration, or a taste of local flavours, Montville offers a charming and enriching experience.

7. Stanthorpe

A family day trip from Brisbane to Stanthorpe offers a delightful blend of scenic drives, outdoor adventures, and kid-friendly attractions.

Driving time from Brisbane is approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Our favourite stop includes the Christmas farm, where the kids can feed farm animals and walk through their field of Christmas trees. A visit here is never complete without trying their popular hot chocolate, and trust me, it is so good!

Other activities we enjoyed in Stanthorpe are apple picking, a hike at Giraween National Park and wine tasting at one of its many vineyards.

We highly suggest visiting Stanthorpe in Autumn, as the place accentuates the striking colours of the Autumn season.

8. Sirromet Winery

If you want to visit a vineyard and wine cellar that is not too far away from Brisbane, then Sirromet Winery should be on the list.

It is approximately a 30 to 45-minute drive from Brisbane, offering wine tasting and cellar door tours.

We like buying a bottle of wine and enjoying it together while the kids run around the vast landscape. There are also wallabies around the area that delight the young ones.

They offer an on-site restaurant and cafe, giving you more food and drink options.

9. Tropical Fruit World

Tropical Fruit World is an exciting and unique day trip from Brisbane, located just south of the Queensland border, near the Gold Coast.

It’s a family-friendly destination that offers visitors the chance to explore a plethora of tropical fruits and learn about their cultivation, history, and cultural significance.

We very much enjoyed the guided tour of the farm, where we were shown around the orchards, given in-depth knowledge of the fruit-growing process, and allowed to taste the fruit directly from the trees.

The kids’ personal favourite was cracking fresh macadamia nuts and eating them straight up! We also love the relaxing river cruise at the end of the tour.

With its fun tours, Tropical Fruit World is a hit with kids and families, making it a perfect day trip from Brisbane for all ages.

10. Burleigh Head National Park- Oceanview Track

This is one of my favourite day trips from Brisbane. We couldn’t recommend this highly enough, especially with the little ones!

The Oceanview Track is a scenic coastal walking trail situated within Burleigh Head National Park, along the Gold Coast coastline. The park is easily accessible by car and public transportation, with parking available near the entrance off Goodwin Terrace.

Upon arriving at the car park you will be greeted by spectacular ocean views. We sat on the grass for a while to take in the breathtaking view in front of us.

There are lots of relaxing spots for a picnic, and benches if you plan to sit back and enjoy a good book.

We visited this place specifically to do the walking track. It is ideal for families with young children, as it is a very easy walk and is pram-accessible. It is a 1.2-kilometre walking trail (one way).

The best part about this trail is the stunning panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the surrounding coastline. As you walk, you’ll be treated to breathtaking vistas of the azure waters, golden beaches, and rugged headlands that characterise the Gold Coast region.

11. Tallebudgera Creek

Tallebudgera Creek is located on the Gold Coast. It is a popular spot for locals due to its stunning natural beauty and a variety of outdoor activities.

This is our personal favourite if we are up for a beach trip. The water is clear and calm, so the kids can safely swim and play on the shore. The area is surrounded by lush bushland, offering a scenic environment for a relaxing day out.

It has picnic tables, barbecue areas and a very nice playground just near the water. It ticks all the boxes for the best beach day trip from Brisbane.

12. Lake Moogerah Picnic Area

If you are up for a scenic drive through the Scenic Rim region, with stops at local cafes and farm gates, then stop by Lake Moogerah. It is located approximately 90 kilometres southwest of Brisbane.

While having a picnic with the family, you will be awed by the stunning lake and mountain views as your backdrop.

Amenities include picnic tables, free barbecues, and a playground. It also has plenty of open space for the kids to run around.

13. Toowoomba Japanese Garden

The Toowoomba Japanese Garden is located approximately 125 kilometres west of Brisbane.

We highly recommend visiting during spring (September–November) when the garden comes alive with colour and the delicate Cherry Blossoms create a breathtaking scenery.

The kids have so much fun following the walking paths that lead through traditional Japanese landscaping and picturesque red bridges. They were entertained by the koi-filled ponds and gentle waterfalls.

They can spot some wildlife such as ducks, turtles, and colourful koi that add to the tranquil experience. It also has rest areas that provide a perfect place to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

14. Byron Bay

Can you do a day trip from Brisbane to Byron Bay? Definitely! It is a perfect getaway for beaches, food, and nature!

Do not forget to visit the popular Byron Bay Lighthouse, as it is popular for a reason. It stands proudly on Australia’s most easterly point, offering panoramic views of Byron Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

After visiting the lighthouse, you can enjoy a picnic at Byron Bay’s beautiful beaches or just walk around the shops, blend in with the town’s relaxed bohemian vibe and enjoy its many great cafés.

15. Palm Beach Parklands

Palm Beach Parklands is a vibrant recreational area located on the Gold Coast. Known for its family-friendly amenities and scenic beauty, it’s a popular destination for both locals and visitors.

We love this place simply because of the calm waters and big open space where kids can run around and play. It has the lovely Dune Cafe nearby for a good cup of coffee or brunch.

Otherwise, the family can bring a picnic and make use of the barbecue facilities while the kids engage at the Pirate Playground, a large pirate ship play area for them to climb, slide, run and jump around.

16. Wellington Point Recreation Reserve

Wellington Point Recreation Reserve, located approximately 25 km southeast of Brisbane CBD, is a cherished coastal destination on the Redland Coast.

We personally believe this is the best place to visit if you want to witness the most beautiful sunset.

Another must-do experience is the King Island walk. During low tide, a natural sand causeway emerges, allowing visitors to walk to King Island. This unique two-kilometre return walk offers stunning ocean views.

Apart from that, the kids also get to enjoy the playground, swim in the calm waters and build sandcastles.

This place also features a jetty popular for fishing, multiple shaded picnic spots equipped with tables and benches and electric barbecue facilities.

We spent two weeks on a campervan with our little girls on Queensland’s east coast, and it was one of the most memorable experiences we’ve had.

So stop putting off that plan with the little ones and read on to find out how we did it, survived, and had the best time of our lives!

Cairns to Brisbane Road Trip Distance

The distance between Cairns and Brisbane is approximately 1,700 kilometers (1,050 miles), which translates to about 20 hours of driving time.

For those going on this road trip with young kids, we highly recommend a one-way itinerary. This means flying to Cairns and then driving back to Brisbane, or doing so in reverse, whichever is more convenient.

How many days does it take to drive from Cairns to Brisbane?

The duration of the drive from Cairns to Brisbane can vary depending on various factors, including your preferred route, driving speed, and the number of stops you make along the way.

We highly recommend breaking up the trip over several days to make the most of the scenic route and enjoy the attractions along the way. For us with two small kids, we decided to do a 14-day Cairns to Brisbane road trip.

This allows for a more relaxed pace, with opportunities to explore notable destinations and attractions along the Queensland coast, without rushing or getting overtired from the long drive.

Is it Worth Driving from Cairns to Brisbane?

A visit to Queensland is never complete without doing the ultimate Cairns to Brisbane road trip (or vice versa).

The coastal drive along the Pacific Coast Way is renowned for its breathtaking scenery. You can enjoy stunning beaches, national parks, rainforests, and charming coastal towns along the way.

With so many things to do and see, this road trip with the kids has definitely been one of the best experiences we had as a family.

Cairns to Brisbane Road Trip Itinerary

Here is our very detailed 14-day Cairns to Brisbane Road Trip itinerary with kids:

Day 1: Fly to Cairns

As we are based in Brisbane, we decided to fly from Brisbane and start our road trip from Cairns, mainly because of the availability of the campervan on our preferred dates. A non-stop flight from Brisbane to Cairns takes approximately 2.5 hours.

You can always do a Brisbane to Cairns drive, whichever suits you best.

Things to Do:

Swim at the Cairns Lagoon

It is common knowledge in far north Queensland to never swim along the beaches due to the risk of having a nasty encounter with crocodiles, or jellyfish during the stinger season.

Kids can still stay entertained by swimming at the lagoon.

Visit Rusty’s Market

If you love trying a plethora of cuisines, then this is the place to be. This place is vibrant and colorful, with a variety of food, drinks, and fresh produce. The prices are reasonable too.

Take note though that Rusty’s Market is only open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Enjoy Pancakes at Helga’s Pancake House

A perfect place for brunch or quiet early morning breakfasts. Their pancake meals are not only so good but also come in huge sizes. Make sure you get here as soon as they open to avoid the long queue.

In addition, the menu is very kid-friendly. The girls were very much impressed when their pancake meals arrived in a shape of a bunny and a puppy.

Overnight Stay: Hides Hotel

We booked our stay at Hides Hotel. It is reasonably priced. The rooms are clean and spacious but a bit worn out. It is a fairly decent place to stay for only two nights, especially if you will be out most of the day.

The best thing about staying here is its prime location. Woolworths is just across the road. The hotel is surrounded by shops, cafes, and restaurants. The Cairns Lagoon is just a short walk away. Everything is within walking distance.

Day 2: Day Trip to Kuranda

You have to spend at least a day in Kuranda to be able to enjoy what this peaceful and lovely little town has to offer.

We booked a round-trip journey to Kuranda through the official Skyrail Website. They also have a hotel pickup option, which is very convenient if you have kids. Otherwise, you can read reviews first and book through Tripadvisor.

Things to Do:

Drift on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

We took the Skyrail on our way to Kuranda. There are 2 optional stops you can make en route, where you can just hop back on the Skyrail anytime you want.

We highly recommend making these stops, as the short rainforest walks and views of Barron Falls are just beautiful.

Eat and Shop Along Kuranda Heritage Markets

The moment you step off the Skyrail, you will be welcomed by a variety of shops, cafes, and restaurants along the streets at Kuranda Heritage Markets.

Appreciate Arts and Crafts at Kuranda Original Markets

This market at Kuranda Village is more colourful, entertaining kids and adults alike with different kinds of shops. We found our walk here more enjoyable, probably because of the very chill and relaxing vibe.

The kids enjoyed the Honey House, where they could see bees in their hives.

Ride the Kuranda Scenic Railway

On the way home, we took the popular Scenic Railway, which turned out to be a great idea as we were able to spend lots of time at their Instagram-worthy railway station while waiting for the train to depart.

The station has a pretty cafe, beautifully decorated and surrounded by a variety of plants.

The ride was nothing short of spectacular.

Day 3 Campervan Pickup: Cairns to Cowley Beach

A direct drive from Cairns to Cowley Beach takes 1 hour and 30 minutes, but because we decided to take the scenic route via Atherton Tablelands it took us an hour longer.

Things to Do:

Delight on a Scenic Drive at Atherton Tablelands

This was not part of the planned itinerary, however, a few searches online and we found Atherton Tablelands to be a very interesting place. So why not take the longer route?

The moment we left Cairns and drove towards Atherton Tablelands, the never-ending scenic mountain views and lush green fields took our breath away. It was definitely worth the change in itinerary.

The drive via Atherton Tablelands consists mostly of steep mountains and narrow, winding roads. Extra care is imperative, especially when driving a motorhome or caravan.

Chase Waterfalls at Atherton Tablelands

Atherton Tablelands is famous for its Waterfall Circuit. The most popular and easily accessible by kids are Millaa Millaa Falls, Ellinjaa Falls, and Zillie Falls, to name a few.

We did not have the luxury of time to do the Waterfall Circuit altogether but we managed to stop at Millaa Millaa Falls.

We made a mental note to come back to Atherton Tablelands and spend probably a week there, as the place itself has so much to offer.

Fishing at Cowley Beach

If you are like my husband who is fond of fishing, then you should include in your itinerary a stopover along the shores of Cowley Beach. It is a popular fishing spot, situated near the town of Cardwell.

Luckily our campsite is just right next to the beach.

Overnight Stay: Cowley Beach Caravan Park

We knew we would be arriving late so we chose this no-frills campsite that has the basic facilities we need for a one-night stay. We booked a beachfront-powered site for only $25 (for 2 adults and 2 children).

Day 4 Cowley Beach to Townsville

Driving to our next stop-Townsville from Cowley Beach takes approximately 2 hours and 50 minutes, sans the stopovers along the way.

Things to Do:

Keep an Eye Out for Cheap Bananas and other Fresh produce

Along the highway, you will never miss signs of fresh produce for sale, at very reasonable prices. Mostly they are displayed on honesty stalls, where you just pick whichever you want to buy and leave your payment in a locked box.

Stop for Coffee at Cardwell

Primo Cafe is a coffee cart right along Cardwell Beach. It is conveniently located along the highway-this and an amazingly good view of the beach made us really enjoy this stopover.

It is a perfect place to stretch your legs as you enjoy the view, sit back and relax with the warm summer breeze blowing through your face.

Take a Dip at the Swimming Pool

I mostly booked campsites with swimming pools for the kids to enjoy. We made this trip on a hot summer season so cooling down for a swim is definitely a must during a stopover.

Overnight Stay: Big4 Tasman Holiday Parks-Rowes Bay

This is a lovely place to spend the night as it has great facilities for kids, with the beach just across the road. The place is equipped with a swimming pool, basketball and tennis courts, outdoor games, activities for families, and lots more.

Aside from caravan and camping sites, they also have cabins available for an overnight stay.

Day 5 Townsville to Bowen

Townsville to Bowen is a 2.5- hour drive.

Things to Do:

Enjoy Panoramic Views at Castle Hill Lookout

Castle Hill Lookout is a popular tourist destination located in Townsville. It is a prominent hill that rises 286 meters above sea level and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city, Magnetic Island, and the surrounding coastline.

The Strand

The Strand is another popular attraction in Townsville. It is a picturesque waterfront area that stretches along the coast for about 2.2 kilometers, with stunning views of the Coral Sea and Magnetic Island.

It offers a variety of recreational activities including but not limited to a waterpark, picnic, bbq facilities, pools, walking and cycling paths, cafes, and restaurants.

Buy Cheap Bowen Mangoes During Summer Season

Bowen is well-known for its abundance of sweet mangoes, especially during summer. Keep an eye out for honesty stalls along the roads as you enter Bowen. They cost only A$10 a box.

Or better yet, pick mangoes for free. We were lucky to have a lovely chat with one of the locals at the holiday park and she did mention we can pick mangoes from the mango tree at the public park next to where we were staying.

Keep the Kids Busy at the Kids Hub

Picking kid-friendly holiday parks has its perks. They offer so many activities to keep the kids entertained while the adults can relax. The holiday park we were staying in offers a free kids’ hub for all ages, with everything in it to keep them busy.

Swimming and Fishing

While hubby was busy fishing, I and the girls enjoyed a lovely time at the swimming pool. This is where the kids can use all of those stored energy, and be able to get a good night’s sleep later on.

Savor on that Beachfront View

We booked a beachfront site, and the sound of waves crashing through the shore is just so soothing. A glass of wine at sunset with nothing to do but just stare at the ocean is all that we needed.

Overnight Stay: NRMA Bowen Beachfront Holiday Park

There are lots of reasons why we love this place. Beachfront sites, great facilities for kids, well-maintained and clean showers/ toilets to name a few. Their beachfront sites book out quickly so our best advise is to make a booking months in advance.

Day 6 Bowen to Airlie Beach

The rain was pouring on this easy 1-hour drive to Airlie Beach, thus giving us no choice but to do lesser stopovers and just head straight to our campsite.

Things to Do:

Visit Horseshoe Bay

We ran out of luck as the rain never stopped since morning. We drove by Horseshoe Bay, and did some lazy lounging, singing, and chatting with the girls while hopefully waiting for the rain to stop, which never did.

What a bummer as the place really is beautiful. Another mental note to re-visit!

Stroll Along the Shores of Airlie Beach

We arrived at Airlie Beach on a gloomy morning, but it never stopped us from exploring the beach. We escaped the busy and bustling town proper by going for a stroll along the shoreline which was really peaceful and quiet.

Overnight Stay: Tasman Holiday Parks – Airlie Beach

The best thing about this Holiday Park is the ensuite site. Yes, we had our own private bathroom. This cost us A$66 for a powered site, not bad for convenience.

Day 7 Explore the Whitsundays

Things to Do

Whitsundays Half-Day Tour

If like us, time is a bit limited for you, then we highly suggest taking the half-day tour to see the Whitsundays. We went with Cruise Whitsundays through Tripadvisor and the tour includes morning/ afternoon tea.

The cruise was very relaxing and smooth sailing, the boat was huge with comfortable seats. Morning tea was nice with a variety of choices.

Not to mention, the powdery white sand and turquoise blue waters of Whitehaven Beach are definitely worth it.

Chill at Hamilton Island

On the way back from the cruise, we luckily got to do a short stopover at Hamilton Island for a change of vessel.

Walk Around Airlie Town

The port of Airlie is just a short walk from the town centre. After the morning cruise, we headed to town for a stroll and a hearty bite. It was lined up with busy shops, cafes and restaurants.

Let the Kids Run Loose at the Playground

Right next to the lagoon is a nice playground for kids to enjoy and run around.

Swim at the Airlie Beach Lagoon

After some time at the playground, we let the girls have a quick dip at the lagoon. It was a good time as the place was not crowded.

Airlie to Cape Hillsborough drive takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Up Close with the Kangaroos

After settling into our site, we noticed there are lots of roos walking past without even getting bothered by us or the people around. I guess they are used to it. Next thing we know we are already surrounded by kangaroos and wallabies.

The twins even got to approach a couple of them and was able to give them a nice pat. Oh the excitement and happiness on their faces when they were able to get up close and personal with the kangaroos!

Let Kids Discover Nature

Camping is an opportunity to go back to basics and teach our kids to appreciate and love nature, despite the rapidly changing world we are in nowadays. On this trip, they were amazed by the variety of insects and animals they encountered.

Collect Sea Shells at the Shore

It was a beautiful afternoon at Cape Hillsborough and since our campsite is right at the beachfront, we decided to head out for a stroll. The girls had this great idea to collect colorful and pretty shells along the way. This is a really fun activity for them!

Movie Under the Stars

Right after another dip at the pool and a nice dinner, we headed outside the cafe for the outdoor cinema. It was Ant Man showing which the kids and adults enjoyed.

Star Gazing

It was a very lovely evening with clear skies. We can visibly see thousands of stars in the sky that night which seems within arms reach. This, and the sound of the beach nearby is just perfect to cap the night.

Overnight Stay: Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park

Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park has really great amenities for families. They also have cabins for an overnight stay, a water slide, a swimming pool, a diner, and a shop for basic grocery needs in case you have forgotten something.

Day 9 Cape Hillsborough to Yeppoon

Cape Hillsborough to Yeppoon takes approximately 4 hours and 20 minutes. This is one of the longest drives we’ve done in a day on this Cairns to Brisbane road trip.

Sunrise with the Kangaroos

The main reason we decided to spend the night at Cape Hillsborough Nature Tourist Park is to tick one of the boxes on our bucket list- that is to experience meeting kangaroos by the beach at sunrise.

Indeed, it did not disappoint. The next morning we woke up very early to witness nature at its finest: sunrise, beach, and wildlife.

A Quick Visit at Mackay Botanic Gardens

Given the long drive, we decided to do a quick stop at Mackay to meet up with an old friend and at the same time stretch our legs. We let the kids run around the lovely botanical gardens before the long drive ahead.

Day 10 Yeppoon

We decided to spend two nights in Yeppoon, as the place really piqued our interest. So far it was our best stopover.

Things to Do

Yeppoon Lagoon

I must say, after travelling throughout the east coast of Queensland, this is the best lagoon we have visited so far. It is huge, sitting right next to a lovely cafe. The lagoon itself is beautifully designed, with a separate swimming area for smaller kids.

There are showers and changing rooms next to it, which are clean and pretty impressive as well.

Keppel Bay Marina

Keppel Bay Marina offers access to the stunning Keppel Islands and the Great Barrier Reef, which are renowned for their pristine beaches, clear waters, and vibrant marine life.

This marina serves as a hub for boating, yachting, and water-based activities in the region. Not only that, it has waterfront dining options. We came here for lunch, and the views are magnificent. We greatly enjoyed the good food as well.

Causeway Lake

Causeway Lake is a picturesque coastal water located in Yeppoon. It’s a popular spot for both locals and tourists due to its natural beauty and recreational opportunities. We stopped by here as it is a popular fishing spot as well.

Overnight Stay: NRMA Capricorn Yeppoon Holiday Park

This place has everything you need in one place to keep the kids up on their feet. They have a huge playground, games room, swimming pool with a large water slide, pedal carts, jumping pillow, and outdoor cinema.

Day 11 Yeppoon: A Day at the Campsite

Enjoy a Hearty Breakfast

On our second day in Yeppoon, we decided to start at a slow pace. We prepared a lovely campsite-cooked brekky, not minding the time and just doing what we love to do best-get lazy.

Kids’ Playground

We decided to let this be a day for the kids. Since our accommodation has everything we need for them, we opted to say at the campsite for the entire day.

The playground is situated around a large area of sand, where they can also build sand castles or just get all messy.

Jumping Pillow and Indoor/Outdoor Games

They offer a large jumping pillow and indoor and outdoor games for the girls to keep themselves busy.

Swimming Pool and Water Slide

This place boasts two swimming pools, with one having a tall waterslide. The girls, with a lot of encouragement, tried the slide with me, and they just couldn’t stop after their first go! It was one of our most memorable moments on this road trip.

Day 12 Yeppoon to Agnes Water

Yeppoon to Agnes Water takes approximately 3 hours.

Explore the Capricorn Caves

Doing a Cairns to Brisbane road trip is never complete without stopping over at the Capricorn Caves.

Capricorn Caves offers guided tours for visitors, allowing you to explore the stunning cave formations and learn about the geology and history of the caves. There are different tour options, including adventure tours for those seeking a more immersive experience.

One of the main highlights of the Capricorn Caves is the Cathedral Cave, a large chamber with excellent acoustics, making it a popular venue for concerts and weddings. The natural amphitheatre-like space creates a unique atmosphere for events.

A Relaxing Walk By the Beach

Our accommodation is right next to the beautiful Agnes Water Beach. We had a relaxing stroll, letting our feet get wet and watching quite a few people ride the waves.

Overnight Stay: NRMA Agnes Water Holiday Park

The best part about this place is the cafe and beachside accommodation. However we noticed amongst all the holiday parks and campsites we’ve stayed at, this is the most cramped and crowded, which we are not really a fan of.

Day 13 Agnes Water to Sunshine Coast

The drive from Agnes Water to the Sunshine Coast takes approximately 4.5 hours.

Breakfast at Agnes Water Cafe

The next morning we had a good breakfast by the beach at the campsite’s cafe. It was such a lovely morning, with great views of the ocean.

Bundaberg Botanic Gardens

Almost halfway through our trip, we decided to stop by Bundaberg Botanic Gardens for a picnic. They have picnic tables right across the playground. A good spot for some lunch and keeping an eye on the girls while playing.

Stretch Those Legs at the Playground

Bundaberg Botanic Gardens have such a nice and huge playground for the girls to have a break from all that drive, and prepare them for another long drive ahead.

Devonshire Tea at Lychee Divine

The drive to Sunny Coast was very slow and dragging as there were so many road works along the way. We knew we needed a break and by luck, we passed by a big sign along the road that says “Lychee Divine.”

We were only hoping to get a cup of coffee but instead, we had a lovely Devonshire tea on the patio with a nice view of the orchard surrounding the estate.

A must-try is their lychee ice cream, which the kids devoured.

Delight your Taste Buds with some Asian Fusion

We had dinner at Rice Boi as per a friend’s recommendation. It is a modern Asian fusion restaurant located along Mooloolaba Wharf. The food is superb!

Because of its high demand, the restaurant does not accept online bookings, so word of advise, come early! We arrived before 6 PM and there was already a long queue.

Overnight Stay: Big 4 Maroochy River

We checked in here after our delish dinner and were greeted by a nicely lit fire pit outside the camp kitchen, which was right next to our site. The girls enjoyed some fun marshmallow roasting before we called it a night.

This amazing place offers a swimming pool, playground, jumping pad, barbecue area, and lots more for the family to enjoy.

Day 14 Sunshine Coast to Brisbane and Campervan Dropoff

Things to Do:

Fishing at Mooloolaba River

Before heading home, we stopped by the Mooloolaba River for some chill time while hubby took advantage of the tide and good weather to do a bit of fishing. It was a perfect last day for us before we dropped off our campervan.

After lunch, we hit the road for the last time and dropped the campervan in Brisbane before arriving safe and sound at our last stopover – home sweet home!

We are one of the lucky ones who live only ten minutes away from Sirromet Winery. This is one of our favourite places to visit on our days off when we just want to relax and enjoy a bottle of wine. Trust me, this is still feasible even with two little humans.

How to Get to Sirromet Winery From Brisbane

It is conveniently located 30 minutes southeast of Brisbane. The fastest and easiest way to get there is by car. Otherwise, you can also take the bus plus a short taxi ride, which would take an hour or so.

How to Get to Sirromet Winery from Gold Coast

The best part about this place is that it is in proximity to the Gold Coast as well. Sirromet is just a 30- to 45-minute drive from the Gold Coast.

What to Do at Sirromet Winery

Sirromet boasts excellent dining, wine tasting and glamping experience. From its award-winning restaurants and tented pavilions to its frequently visited cellar door, this place has a lot to offer to family and friends.

The setting itself is picturesque, offering relaxing views while you sip on your glass of wine. It is one of our favourite destinations as it has the whole enchilada, which includes a vineyard, winery, lavender farm, restaurants, cellar door and unique accommodations.

Having two little kids with us, we love coming here on special occasions. However, most of the time they are spur-of-the-moment visits.

On those random days, we usually order something to eat at the cellar door and enjoy a beer or wine, have good conversations, watch the girls play, and wait for the day to pass us by.

Dine at Sirromet Winery Restaurants

Sirromet Winery has a couple of restaurants namely Lurleen’s and Tuscan Terrace. They also have the Cellar Door Cafe if you want to devour something lighter.

Tuscan Terrace

This Tuscany-inspired restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We had our lunch there on our wedding anniversary, and the food and service were great. They offer both indoor and outdoor dining.

We highly recommend eating outdoors as the view is just amazing.

It is best to make a reservation, especially if you prefer their alfresco dining, as they get booked quite quickly. You can find more details as to their opening hours, breakfast, lunch and dinner menus here.

This is open exclusively for private functions. You can book for birthday parties, weddings and any other special occasions here.

Sirromet Cellar Door Cafe

I love that they have a cafe offering coffee and some sweet treats, which is great when coming here in the early afternoons. They have a kids’ menu for the little ones. You can also purchase your favourite bottles of wine here.

The best part about the Cellar Door is that we can choose to sit on one of the picnic tables outside, which is right next to the playground. We highly recommend doing this as the view is relaxing and just spectacular.

We like to sit here and wait for the sunset with our glass of wine. A bonus is that the girls can get themselves busy at the playground while we can still keep a close eye on them.

On the weekends, you can also enjoy live music at the Cellar Door from 12 pm to 3 PM, plus several events happening every month.

Walk Around the Lavender Farm

We can already see the lavender farm from the road prior to turning to the entrance. Out of curiosity, we walked around the grounds and voila! What beautiful scenery. We can also smell the lavender scent in the air.

Note: There are lots of bees close to the lavender plants so remind the kids to be careful, or better yet, for those with bee sting allergies just avoid getting too close.

Spot Some Wildlife

The moment we drove past the beautifully designed rustic entrance at Sirromet Winery, we could already spot a couple of kangaroos at the side of the road and along the vineyard.

Otherwise, a walk around the grounds will keep you fascinated as you will surely spot more of them jumping past you. The girls were so delighted to see them up close.

Watch the Sunset

Sunsets over wine never get old. Our best days here are waiting until the sun goes down. At the car park prior to leaving, we saw a beautiful sunset and could not help but pause and take a moment to gaze at the beautiful backdrop.

Sirromet Winery Accommodation

Sanctuary by Sirromet provides different accommodation types suitable for couples, families and larger groups. Their most popular one is the Sirromet Glamping experience, well-equipped with an ensuite, mini bar and a balcony.

Surrounded by trees and wildlife, you can immerse in nature, do some bushwalking or experience wine tasting and tours while staying in one of their accommodations.

Winery Tour and Tasting

We have always been contemplating trying this. The Cellar Door does offer a Wine Tasting experience at their bar, or if you have more time, you can try their Winery Tour, which also includes some wine tasting.

Yeppoon is a coastal town around 750 kilometres (8.5-hour drive) from Brisbane. It is located northeast of Rockhampton and is the principal town on the Capricorn Coast. It is famous for its tropical climate, pristine beaches, and beautiful nearby islands.

Free Things to Do in Yeppoon

The best part about Yeppoon is that it has so many free yet still incredible activities to do. If you are budget-conscious, you can still have a lot of fun without even the need to spend a penny.

1. Swim at Yeppoon Lagoon

The Lagoon, I must say, is our best-loved place in Yeppoon. It is beautifully designed for all ages, with a huge infinity pool giving you an amazing view of the vast ocean and Great Keppel Island.

They have lounge chairs and shady palms to relax and lie under with a blanket and a good book. The toilets, showers and changing facilities are impeccably clean. This lagoon has a water play area for younger kids, too.

The best part about this place is that it is FREE, and parents can have peace of mind knowing the lagoon has lifeguards looking out to make sure everyone is safe. It is also a good place to go for a swim at night if you want to avoid the crowd.

2. Fishing at Causeway Lake

This is a popular spot for fishing as it is home to a wide variety of fish. Aside from fishing, you can relax in its shaded areas with picnic tables and BBQs, swim safely in the waters or do some paddleboarding. There is also a fish and chips shop nearby.

3. Take Photos of Street Art

4. Indulge in the View at Keppel Bay Marina

Day or night, Keppel Bay Marina boasts fantastic water views surrounded by lovely boats lined along the harbour. It is a great place to stroll around and just enjoy the ocean breeze.

This place is spot on for lazy days spent just walking along the shore. You can bring some lunch and have a picnic while watching the ocean and Keppel Island ahead or eat at nearby cafes and restaurants.

6. Stop by The Singing Ship

Situated at Emu Park, this is another beautiful spot with spectacular ocean views. The name is derived from the lovely humming sound produced by the pipes of the ship as the wind blows.

You can sit back and listen to the wind singing, take a walk towards the ANZAC memorial, or stroll along the long boardwalk which is easily accessible by prams and wheelchairs. Lots of parking and shops are also available nearby.

Head to the markets if you want to see and buy a good selection of locally designed arts and crafts, fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods and pastries, jams, chutneys, handicrafts, plants, good coffee and whatnot.

11. Shell World Yeppoon

It is great for kids to see an amazing collection of shells. Shells and memorabilia can also be purchased here at a very reasonable price.

You only need a gold coin donation to have a look around, but worth the short visit as it is very informative, with a huge diversity of shells from all over the world.

12. Cooberie Park Wildlife Sanctuary

Get up close and personal with a large variety of wildlife. The place boasts more than 300 animals to see and visit. They have ducks, peacocks, emus, snakes, and monkeys to name a few.

There is also an opportunity for kids to pet, feed and interact with some koalas, kangaroos, crocodiles, parrots, monkeys and more.

Drinks and snacks are available for you to purchase, or you can bring your own food for a picnic with the family. Do not forget to bring the kids’ swimmers as there is also a swimming pool for them to enjoy.

13. Koorana Crocodile Farm

Approximately 28 kilometres south of Yeppoon is the Koorana Crocodile Farm. It is a family-run business that provides a home to over 3000 crocodiles.

They offer guided tours where kids can watch the crocodiles being fed, witness a baby crocodile hatch from its egg and even get the chance to hold little crocs.

It is an educational and fun experience for everyone. At the end of the tour, guests can satisfy their tummies by trying out their crocodile meals including crocodile steak, burger, kebab and pie, to name a few. They also have a kiosk and souvenir shop that offer crocodile leather products.

14. Appleton Park

Not far from Yeppoon Lagoon is Appleton Park. Let the kids run loose and burn their energy at this well-maintained park. The place is surrounded by shady trees and beautiful gardens. Onsite they have a kids’ playground and skating area.

Facilities include toilets, barbecue and picnic tables.

15. Keppel Kraken

This water play area and playground is another must-visit if you are travelling with young kids, especially on those hot summer days. The place features a plethora of sea creature sculptures which are very amusing for little humans.

There are plenty of shady areas for parents to sit back and relax while the kids are having the time of their lives.

There are picnic tables and BBQ areas on-site. The beach is just a stone’s throw away. Coffee and food options are also available just across the road.

16. Take a Sunset Cruise

After a busy day of swimming and sightseeing, it is time to relax and just watch in admiration the beauty of nature. Hop on board a luxurious catamaran, sit back and bask in the sunset while enjoying a cheese platter with the rest of your friends and family.

17. Pineapple Rail Trail

This is a good alternative for other fun activities to do in Yeppoon. Originally constructed in 1909, this railway was used mainly for the transportation of pineapples. The track then closed in 2006. Fast forward to 2014, it reopened and is now popular for walking, jogging and cycling.

Stretching four and a half kilometres, this flat walking track is great for families. Kids can bring their scooters or bicycles along. You can also opt for a pleasant walk while reflecting on the history of the rail trail.

18. Go Camping

There is always something about camping and going back to basics that excite the kids and even us, adults. There are so many camping options to choose from in and around Yeppoon.

You can opt for free camping, beachfront sites, or more expensive campgrounds with a variety of facilities such as a swimming pool, water slide, jumping pillow, kids’ playground, bicycles and scooters for rent, kids’ game room and whatnot.

Our personal favourites are NRMA Capricorn Holiday Park and Discovery Parks Coolwaters, as they have great facilities to keep the kids entertained.

19. Kayaking and Paddle Boarding

You can rent or bring your own kayaks and paddleboards as Yeppoon has popular beaches, creeks and estuaries to enjoy these activities. Causeway Lake, Kemp Beach, Cooee Bay, Waterpark Creek, Hedlow Creek, are just a few of these hotspots.

20. Go Four-Wheel Driving

Warm up your engines and bring your 4WD to the long stretch of sand north of Farnborough Beach! Sandy Point is popular for 4-wheel driving if you want a relaxing drive along the beach.

In addition, there are so many places to explore at Byfield National Park, which is mostly 4WD-accessible.

21. Bluff Point Walking Track

From the car park, you can choose to do the shortest walk, which is the Turtle Lookout (700 metres). If you get lucky, you can spot turtles swimming close to the beach. Not far ahead is the Ritamata Outlook, which is only 720 metres from the car park.

Otherwise, you can keep going to complete the whole 2.3-kilometre circuit. The walk boasts coastal views and stunning scenery.

22. Rosslyn Bay and Fan Rock Lookout

This is just a short walk from the car park (700 metres return). Both are overlooking Keppel Bay and its nearby islands. Be impressed by the interesting fan-like rock formations moulded through time and enjoy the gorgeous view of the Keppel Bay Marina.

23. High Valley Dawn Permaculture Farm

A 10-minute drive from the town centre is this 140-acre property which is popular for its sustainable farm features. They offer farm tours every Sunday, showcasing a self-sufficient agricultural system and fresh and organic produce.

They house free-range animals such as ducks, chickens, cattle, and sheep, which makes the tour an enjoyable experience for kids, too.

After the tour, you can opt for a farm-to-table experience by trying out their highly-rated Beaches restaurant, which is located at Rosslyn Bay and is only a 5-minute drive from the farm.

Day Trips from Yeppoon

Now that we have covered most of the things to do in Yeppoon, let us have a look at nearby towns to add to your list of adventures.

24. Emu Park

A laidback town located 21 kilometres south of Yeppoon. This is home to the popular Singing Ship. It makes a good stopover for a day trip if you are planning for a slow-paced and relaxing day out. This lovely little town boasts beautiful beaches, parks and good fishing spots.

25. Rockhampton

Known as the beef capital of Australia due to its vast beef production, never leave Rocky without trying a steak.

The 45-minute drive from Yeppoon would also be worth it by visiting some popular places in this town-the Botanic Gardens, Rockhampton Zoo, Heritage Village and Mount Archer, to name a few.

26. Capricorn Caves

We highly suggest dropping by Capricorn Caves for a cave tour while you are in Yeppoon. The Caves is a 40-minute drive from Yeppoon, offering different tour types which vary in duration and difficulty level.

You can choose from any of their tours depending on how adventurous you want to go.

We tried the Cathedral Cave tour, which we highly recommend for beginners and young kids. The tour is very amusing for kids and adults alike. It lasts for 45 minutes, which was very informative and fun at the same time.

The kids enjoyed climbing up and down the cave stairs, ducking under beautiful rock formations and walking carefully through narrow gaps and tunnels and over suspension bridges.

There is a shop and cafe next to the cave and toilet facilities on-site.

27. Great Keppel Island

This island lies 15 kilometres off the coast of Yeppoon, which can be accessed by ferry via the Keppel Bay Marina. A day trip here is feasible, or you can stay for a night or two as they also have various accommodations on the island.

If you want to stay away from the crowd, a visit to the island would be great as it features secluded beaches and lots of water sports activities such as snorkelling, scuba diving, kayaking, kite surfing, jet skiing, and more.

28. Byfield National Park

Just 30 minutes north of Yeppoon is Byfield National Park. Due to its terrain, most parts of the national park are accessible only by a 4WD.

A perfect place to visit if you want to immerse yourself in nature as the place is brimming with hidden gems, unspoilt rainforest, swimming holes, long stretch of beaches, sand dunes and more.

29. Pumpkin Island

A 30-minute ferry ride from Keppel Marina, Pumpkin Island is one of Yeppoon’s hidden gems.

You can rent the entire island with a group of friends or family, or book a cabin for solitary relaxation. All of its five cabins have a private deck overlooking the beach. Expect to be swimming and snorkelling in crystal clear waters and chilling on cocktails at sunset.

30. Nob Creek Pottery

A great place for lovers of arts, crafts and things handmade. They have an ample display of unique items, pottery and artwork in a range of colours.

Visitors get to watch a short film on how the pottery is made and can purchase unique and fascinating gifts and memorabilia. They also maintain a beautiful garden and picnic facilities.

31. Stony Creek

Head to the Upper Stony Creek Picnic Grounds and prepare to be mesmerised by one of Yeppoon’s best-kept secrets. Expect to swim in pristine freshwater surrounded by the rainforest.

You can visit here for a day trip or stay for a couple of nights at their spacious campsites.

Amenities include flushing toilets, firepits, picnic and BBQ areas and a day-use area.

Things to Do in Yeppoon at Night

A quiet night with only the sound of the waves is sometimes what we need, especially in this little coastal town. Here are a couple of things you can do at night, sans the bar hopping.

32. Stroll Along the Esplanade

After dinner, you can burn those belly fats by taking a quiet walk under the moon and stars on the esplanade. Along the way, there are good walking paths, seating and viewing areas and some great restaurants to try if you plan to have some dinner beforehand.

33. Watch the Stars at Spring Head Lookout

Don’t forget to pack some good food and a warm blanket before driving to the lookout, as it does get cold and windy at night. Watching the moon and the stars while listening to the sound of the ocean is definitely something you do not want to miss.

Where to Eat in Yeppoon

There are a variety of cafes and restaurants in and around Yeppoon that offer mouth-watering menus. Here are a couple of our recommendations that we tried firsthand.

34. The Rocks Cafe Bar and Restaurant

Nestled adjacent to Yeppoon Lagoon is The Rocks Cafe and Restaurant. It is conveniently located for anyone swimming in the lagoon. Parents can have coffee at the cafe for a start or buy ice cream and pizza for the kids when they get tired and hungry from swimming.

They also offer lunch and dinner at the restaurant, which we have yet to try but looks very promising.

35. The Waterline Restaurant

We spoke to a local while swimming at the lagoon and he recommended The Waterline Restaurant for lunch. No wonder the queue was long when we got here. The food is absolutely superb. It can get busy at lunchtime so it would be best to make a booking.

This is located at Keppel Bay Marina and offers a good range of food with waterfront tables and million-dollar water views. The good part is they are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner from Fridays to Sundays.

The Wrap Up: Things to Do in Yeppoon

Yeppoon proved to be one of our favourites during our Cairns to Brisbane road trip in a campervan. We decided to stop over here for three nights as our research showed it is a great place for families.

It turned out that three days are not enough to enjoy this lovely town. The place definitely did not disappoint.

How to Get to Kuranda from Cairns

There are two interesting and fun ways to get to Kuranda from Cairns (and back) if you are planning to do a day trip only. You can depart and return by either the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway or Kuranda Scenic Railway.

Of course, you can always drive to Kuranda but you will miss the fun of gliding on a cable car just metres above a World Heritage tropical rainforest and riding a train passing through waterfalls and breathtaking mountain views.

Cairns to Kuranda by Skyrail

This is a sky cable system that consists of 114 gondolas. It is a unique way to get to Kuranda as you can glide on top of the rainforest with amazing views and make a couple of stops along the way.

Where Does the Skyrail Depart From?

If you choose to ride the Skyrail from Cairns to Kuranda, you have to drive to Smithfield, a suburb just around 15 minutes north of Cairns CBD. The Skyrail departs at Smithfield Terminal. From there, you can purchase tickets for the Skyrail.

If you do not have a car, you can opt to book online for the Skyrail ride and look for booking sites that include hotel pickup.

From Kuranda, the Skyrail departs at Kuranda Skyrail Terminal which is very easy to find and within walking distance to and from Kuranda markets.

What to Expect in the Skyrail Experience

Expect panoramic ocean and mountain views from the top while you are floating above the rainforest.

In transit to Kuranda, there are 2 stops that you can make for free, all included in the Skyrail experience.

First is at Red Peak where kids can stretch and enjoy the long boardwalk along the rainforest. You can also opt to join a guided walk with one of the rangers, where you can learn in-depth knowledge about the flora and fauna of the rainforest.

Second is at Barron Falls where you can find another boardwalk loop and the Edge Lookout. This lookout is made mostly of glass, overlooking Barron Falls with all its beauty.

You can spend as much time as you please at these two stops and hop back on the Skyrail going to Kuranda at any time.

How Long is the Skyrail Trip from Cairns to Kuranda?

Approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes, including the 2 stops at Red Peak and Barron Falls

Cairns to Kuranda by Train

The vintage-looking train transporting you from Kuranda to Cairns (and vice versa) is definitely one for the books. This is a railway experience bringing you within arms reach to the UNESCO World Heritage Kuranda Rainforest.

Where Does the Scenic Railway Depart From?

From Cairns, you can purchase tickets and depart from Cairns Railway Station located right within Cairns Central Shopping Centre.

The train also operates from Freshwater Railway Station. Departing from here is more suitable for those driving as Freshwater is 15 minutes away from Cairns.

From Kuranda, head to Kuranda Railway Station, just next to the Skyrail Terminal and is only a 5-10 minute walk from Kuranda Markets.

What is Included in the Scenic Railway Experience?

Throughout the journey, there is an audio commentary providing very interesting information about the Wet Tropics and nearby attractions.

There are also drinking water stations provided in each carriage, which comes very handy especially during the warm weather.

The train ride makes a 10-minute stop at Barron Falls Lookout, where travelling guests can hop off and stretch while taking photos. Moreover, there is a 5-minute stop at Freshwater Railway Station for guests hopping on and hopping off.

Things to Do in Kuranda with Kids

In addition to the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail experience, there are still more interesting and fun things to do while in Kuranda:

Kuranda Markets

Kuranda has 2 markets, the Kuranda Heritage Markets and Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets. Both are surrounded by shops and restaurants offering great food, locally sourced produce, handmade goods, arts and crafts, souvenirs and whatnot.

We really favor the ambience, colours and feel as we were walking through Kuranda Original Markets. It has such a carefree and happy vibe that we very much like. Along our walk, we came across a free kids’ corner for kids to draw, colour and paint. It was such a treat for our girls.

Butterfly Sanctuary

This is known as the largest butterfly aviary and exhibit in Australia. The aviary houses around 1500 free-flying butterflies. Interestingly they also have a laboratory that offers educational facts about the life cycle of butterflies and their ecosystem.

This is a learning and at the same time fun experience for kids, as they see a plethora of colourful butterflies.

Kuranda Birdworld

This is home to over 60 species of exotic birds. You can wander around the enclosed sanctuary and meet a variety of birds. Make sure to buy some bird food before your walk to get their attention, and if you get lucky they may even land on your shoulders.

Koala Gardens

Located right next to Kuranda Birdworld, Koala Gardens offers a great range of wildlife. Kids can have the opportunity to feed kangaroos and wallabies, hold koalas up close and personal and see other wildlife such as crocodiles, wombats and snakes.

Kuranda Riverboat Tour

This is a must-do at Kuranda. A tranquil 45-minute boat ride along the river passing through the tropical rainforest. This is a relaxing experience where you can just enjoy the scenery while listening to interesting information about the rainforest and its wildlife.

Kuranda Visitor Information Centre and Nearby Playground

You can drop by the information centre to help plan your itinerary, and then sit back and relax while letting the kids run loose and burn all their energy in the adjacent park and playground.

Things to Know Before You Go

• For the Skyrail and Scenic Railway experience, we recommend purchasing tickets in advance to avoid long queues and any unexpected hurdles on your trip such as tickets selling out on your preferred times.
• Operating days for the Skyrail and Scenic Railway may vary, so make sure you check their website to avoid disappointment.
• We highly recommend making the 2 stops during the Skyrail experience. The Edge Lookout is nothing short of spectacular.

• Make sure you don’t miss the train after the 10-minute stop at Barron Falls Lookout, as there are no other trips going to Cairns after that.
• If you do not have a car, the combination (Skyrail and Scenic Railway) return trip with hotel pickup is the most convenient way for a Cairns to Kuranda day trip, plus you get to experience both train and cableway, which is a win-win.

• We opt to start with the Skyrail from Cairns and return via the Scenic Railway from Kuranda as the train station in Kuranda is worth spending time on. If you are staying in the city, it is also more convenient since the railway station is located within the CBD. This means home is just a short walk away.
• If you do depart from Kuranda Railway Station, allow at least an hour or two before your departure time to get there as the station has a charming, Instagram-worthy cafe. Surrounded by a variety of beautiful plants, it is definitely a great place to sit back and relax on a good cup of coffee while waiting for your train to depart.

• To be able to enjoy and explore Kuranda at your own relaxed pace, leave at the earliest departure time from Cairns.

A visit to Australia is never complete without going on a road trip on a campervan. When we decided to tick this off our bucket list, I ended up putting off the plan so many times as I was always stuck with the question of where and how I would be renting a campervan in Australia.

Where do I start? Which type of campervans should I choose? What are the costs? My mind was clouded with so many questions. Finally, after spending so many hours with Google we managed to hire one. Successfully!

To save beginners like us the hassle of renting a campervan in Australia, we have come up with top tips, tricks, and things to consider prior to booking.

Why Should I Rent a Campervan in Australia?

Convenience

If there is one place to best travel on a campervan, that would be Australia. This country is made for road trips and camping.

You can find rest stops and campgrounds to choose from anywhere, all equipped with more than you can imagine- camp kitchen, BBQ area, hot showers, toilets, laundry, picnic area, beachfront sites, swimming pool, bouncing pillow, kids’ playground, waterpark, etc, of course depending on your budget.

Believe it or not, you can even book a campsite with an ensuite. How amazing is that?

Budget Friendly

Overall you can save on accommodation when going on a long road trip on a campervan.

When on a budget you can find multiple FREE campgrounds in Australia. These campgrounds are well maintained by the council. Most are equipped with basic facilities like a toilet and a shower, while some are only good for self-contained camping.

A self-contained campervan means it has all the facilities you need to camp without any outside facilities like a toilet and shower.

Depending on how much you are willing to spend, you can also find campsites that cost as low as $5 a night and as high as $70 a night. This is based on 2 adults and 2 kids. Of course the lesser number of people the cheaper the fees.

So far the highest we’ve paid for a campsite is $68/night, this is by the way a slab site with ensuite, full-on facilities like a swimming pool, outdoor cinema, jumping pillow, kids’ game room, playground and whatnot.

Flexibility

The best thing about travelling on a campervan is you can spend the night LEGALLY mostly anywhere when plans unexpectedly change.

Truck stops, pubs and hostels offer VERY cheap overnight rates as low as $3/night. Not to mention public or free campsites that are easily available in most stops.

Fun for Kids

I don’t know about you, but for first-timers like me and hubby, we are so excited to travel on a campervan. How much more for our 4-year-old twin girls?

During our trip, I can definitely say the girls had the time of their lives. Seeing the campervan with its own little kitchen and seats that turn into beds wowed them! How much more going on a road trip and stopping at really amazing places!

It is also a great way for kids to learn what it is like to go back to basics and appreciate the simple things in life. It is a fun adventure and a learning opportunity at the same time.

Where to Start When Renting a Campervan in Australia

First things first. Know where you will be going on your road trip, for how long, and what is your budget. Once you have these figured out then you can start looking for campervan rental companies online.

Where to Book a Campervan in Australia

There are lots of options for renting a campervan in Australia. For beginners, I highly recommend doing so through a trusted booking company. I spent days and so many hours reading reviews, groups, blogs, and forums looking for the best places to hire a campervan.

For a newbie like me, the most convenient and hassle-free way to book one is through Discovery Campervans. They offer different types of campervans depending on your budget and they provide you with highly rated campervan companies like Britz, Apollo, Maui, Mighty, Cruisin’, etc.

I, of course, compared prices and tried booking directly through the above-mentioned campervan hire companies. Turned out the prices and inclusions are the same.

Booking through Discovery Campervans was a breeze. Given my busy work schedule, I mostly can only contact them through email, and they were very prompt and helpful with replying to queries.

Things to Consider When Renting a Campervan in Australia

Number of Berths

Berth means the designated sleeping area in a campervan. So for a family of 4, we needed a 4-berth campervan. This basically depends on how many people are going with you on the trip.

Age Restrictions

Anyone driving the campervan should be over 21 years of age. Otherwise, hiring companies may charge you a young driver’s fee.

License Requirements

If you have an Australian driver’s license, this would not be an issue. You can drive any campervan with your car license. However, for those from overseas make sure you have an international driver’s license otherwise, a fee applies as well.

Compare Companies

Campervan rental companies differ in type, make and model of their vehicles. Make sure you check the van year model. Others have extras already included like GPS, awning, flyscreens, etc, while some do not. So be mindful to compare and make sure you are getting a good deal.

Manual Vs. Automatic

To be honest I almost overlooked this option. Make sure you check the type of transmission prior to confirming your booking. Better yet, add this on the filter when searching your vehicle options on the website.

One-Way Fee

If you opt to travel one way and drop the campervan at a designated drop-off location, keep in mind that they will charge a one-way fee for this. This depends on your pick-up and drop-off location. Ours cost $165 for a Cairns to Brisbane one-way itinerary.

Inclusions and Extras

Depending on your needs, preference and budget you can opt for the basics like microwave, stove, fridge, and power. However, there are different extra options to choose from including solar panels, toilet, shower, tv, air-conditioner, heater, camp chairs and table, etc.

Take note though, that having a shower and toilet means you have to find a designated dump point to obviously dump your grey water (used water) and toilet waste. You can easily find these dump points through camping apps like Wikicamps.

For those with young kids, car seats and or booster seats are not usually included so you need to add this at an extra cost. However, there are package options offered when booking that may already include these. I will explain these package options along with insurance further down this post.

As I said, these all fall down to needs, preference, and of course budget.

We opted to book the basic campervan for 4 people as we wanted to stay on highly rated campsites with all other extra facilities included to keep the kids entertained.

Insurance

This part of booking a campervan caught me off guard initially. I first saw a cheap daily rate where I thought, costs are not that bad! But further on the booking process, I realised there are more extra fees.

You need to get insurance for your campervan rental in an event of any damage that may incur along the way. Companies will not allow you to rent their vans, otherwise. In doing so, the rental cost will almost double.

You can also opt for third-party insurance not offered by campervan booking companies but of course, you need to pay the $5000 bond.

Believe me, I’ve requested a quote on probably all highly recommended campervan rental companies there are in the Brisbane area and they all require the same amount of bond.

Package Options

Discovery Campervan does offer a couple of package options, depending on what you want to be covered and any extras you want to be included in the rental such as linens, kitchen equipment, camp table and chairs, booster seats, etc.

You can choose between their Standard package only or add a Stress Free Package on top of the Standard Package.

Standard Package

Includes vehicle insurance, unlimited kilometres, 24-hour roadside assistance, linens and bedding, and kitchen equipment.

The standard package option, which is cheaper will require you to pay a big amount of bond upfront. They will return the bond, given there are no damages when you return the campervan.

Personally, for first-timers like us who have never driven a campervan our entire lives, we were a bit hesitant to risk not getting our bond back. It is a big amount of money involved, and I am talking about $5000 here. Yep, you read it right.

Stress Free Package

Includes extras like booster seats, camp table, camp chairs, linens, LPG, overhead and underbody damage cover, single vehicle accident cover, windscreen and tyre cover and no bond required.

We decided to add this to our standard package which saves us the hassle of bringing all those extra things we need in the campervan (as we are doing a one-way itinerary), NO bond required, plus it has good insurance coverage. This cost us an additional $55/day.

Turned out it was the best decision we made. During our trip, we mistakenly drove into an open carpark with a maximum height limit of 2.9 meters. Since our campervan is 3 meters high, obviously we incurred overhead damage.

The paint was ripped off with scratches on top. In addition, the vent cover came off and we had to patch it up with duct tape as a temporary fix. Given all these damages, we paid nothing as the insurance covers overhead damage. Whew!

Read the fine print

Make sure you read all the minute details. Read, read and read before signing up for a campervan hire. This prevents you from going off-budget and having any unexpected money hurdles later down the track.

Know the Pick Up and Drop off Times

Most campervan companies are closed on Sundays and Public Holidays. Some also close early on weekends. So make sure you check their pick-up and drop-off locations as well as opening and closing hours.

It may be very frustrating to go to a pickup location and find out they are closed.

Dropping off your Campervan

Prior to drop off, there is a checklist given by the rental company which you can look into to make sure you won’t be charged with additional fees. Basic rule is to keep the campervan clean and in order, not necessarily spotless. Fuel should be at least more than half full.

Dropping off our campervan was a breeze, despite the damage it acquired during our trip. We simply filled in a damage entry form, left the keys and booked a cab home.

Is Renting a Campervan in Australia Expensive?

Yes, and no. To give readers an idea, we booked through Discovery Campervans for 12 days from Cairns to Brisbane. Take note this is a one-way trip only. The standard package quote for 12 days is $1524.96

Plus $55/day for the Stress Free package.

On top of that, they have a one-way fee of $165. If you are doing a round-trip itinerary and dropping off the campervan at the same place, then you do not have to worry about this.

All in all, we paid more or less $AUD 2292, give or take a few dollars for the credit card fees.

Top Tips on Renting a Campervan in Australia

Keep an Eye out for Promotions

I booked our campervan 3 months in advance, without any ongoing promotions at that time. I can’t help it. I was too excited and a bit anxious I might run out of availabilities on our chosen dates.

A month later, Apollo Campervan was offering a 50% off on a Cairns to Brisbane route. I was heartbroken. So, yes, it pays to be patient. Don’t rush when booking, but don’t book a little too late as well. Now I know at least two months in advance is just the right time to book.

Recheck Before Booking

Booking a campervan is not cheap at all. So before you click that CONFIRM BOOKING button, make sure you check and recheck what is and is not included in your booking.

Download Wikicamps

I highly recommend downloading the Wikicamps app to find not only free but also all types of campsites, with reliable reviews from campers. This app offers very good and useful information about which campsites are good for an overnighter and what facilities they offer.

Toll Fees

Prior to commencing your road trip, the rental company will give you detailed instructions on how to register for toll road fees. This is a must-do PRIOR to going on the road, as you can be charged by the rental company after dropping off your campervan if you have unpaid toll fees.

Have Built in GPS

If your campervan does not have GPS, might as well bring one. You cannot solely rely on Google maps especially on roads without network service. This happened to us so many times on the road. It is a must-have.

Always be Mindful of Campervan Height

ALWAYS. I cannot emphasise this enough. Newbies as we are we always forget we are driving a 3-metre high campervan. We drove into an open carpark which has an entrance with a maximum height limit of 2.9 metres.

Since the campervan is the same width and almost the same length as our family car, of course we forgot it was NOT our family car. LOL. We drove on, which we admit is the stupidest thing we did. Thankfully we paid for the most expensive insurance cover and I can say it was worth every penny.

Drive at a Slower Speed on Windy Roads

Again, because of the height and length of the campervan, driving on windy roads can be tricky. When doing so at 100kph, you can definitely feel the van wobble, and the wind pushing you towards another lane. In saying this, always keep both hands on the steering wheel with a firm grip.

At a 100kph speed limit, it is safe to drive at 70-80kph instead. Be very careful when driving and meeting a large vehicle.

This happened to us when crossing a bridge and a large truck was moving towards us in the opposite lane. The sudden, stronger wind caused by the truck blew the van towards the side of the bridge.

Thankfully hubby was holding the wheel firmly and was able to steer back quickly towards the middle of the lane.

Consider Other Costs

Like any other road trip, when renting a campervan in Australia be wary that you also have to pay for petrol, food, water, campsites, activities/tours, and tolls.

For beginners like us, the challenge was where to start. However, everything was a walk in the park after that. There may be a few little speed bumps along the way but they were manageable.

It may be a bit costly but for us, that road trip on a campervan was definitely an experience of a lifetime.
